My hercules prophet II MX failed after a month, boo hoo.

When I returned it the shop did not have another but offered a voodoo 5 instead which I took as I need a graphics card urgently.

How to the cards compare?

well i sure like my voodoo5, if you can get a good deal grab it, note there going out of business so there will be/is no factory warrenty. note the v5 is a long card make sure you have room for it, plus a 200+ watt power supply. i feel that you will like the v5 much more than the mx after you set it up /tweak it.

Good choice, the Voodoo5 smashes the MX in every way. Glad to see someone was smart and didn't get pulled into the "they closed so the card must suck" thing.

"the Voodoo5 smashes the MX in every way"

Benskywalker will definitely disagree that. V5 certainly easily kick MX's butt under bandwidth-limited situation, but not every time. Load up MDK2 or Evolva at 1024x768, you'll see how V5 got smashed by MX which only has memory bandwidth of a V4.

Well I already had a 300w psu and i knew that it would fit and that I had a spare power connector that would reach so it went in easy.

But does this sucker produce heat or what!

Where will I find a good tweaking guide as its very slow under 3Dmark2000, even slower than my TNT2Ultra. Is my 500Mhz katmai just too puny?

wow, that's a nice deal. the voodoo was costing twice as much as that mx when it came out. the mx for all its practical strength is a deliberately hamstrung card. I envy you a bit!
3dfx were quite busy with the drivers there. hope you can find them now, lots of people have them at home!
I think the voodoo is good for sims and so on, maybe openGL is not so blistering. anyway, there's lots of reading for you!

In the UK the MX was priced at £100 and the V5 at £250. I have seen a GF2 Ultra at £450 in shops!!!!!!!!!

Now all the V5s available now are £100 and there are loads available.

3D#2K Isnt very Voodoo friendly :frown: or at least what from what I have read and noticed. But hey its just there as a guide for tweaks the real deal is how it performs in games. Then again I get the feeling some folks find benching a game and seek to beat others scores:confused:. Myself I like seeing players explode into a fine red mist on my screen on there way to respawn.:p

Today in Gloucester in the UK. Dixons, Electronic Boytique and various other had piles. I saw at least 10 on the shelves and the gut in Dixons told me they had more in the back but they were going fast.

Thats why I took the exchange today so I would at least have a card.

Ok, MDK is an exception :)

My god noooo....do NOT tarnish a good card by running 3DMark :) If you are tweaking just to get a higher 3DMark score, consider suicide :) If you want tweaks, get the 1.04 drivers, enable refresh optimization, and set depth precision to faster. But do this ONLY for your games, NOT for 3DMark :)

Actually that's not an exception. The GF2 MX has a higher fillrate than the Voodoo 5 so in any situation where the GF2 MX isn't memory bandwidth limited, it will win. This lead is increased in T&L games.

Giants is also a title in which you'll want to have a GeForce/Radeon-class video card instead of Voodoo5. However, your deal was still pretty good since in real-world gaming performance Voodoo5 is compareable to GeForce2 GTS or GeForce DDR rather than GeForce SDR as MX is. In most current popular games which do not utilize advanced DX7 features (bump mapping, cube mapping, T&L) V5 definitely has it's place.

Besides, you'll practically have to upgrade your video card within a year anyway, as DX8 games (Xbox-conversions at least) start to pop up - there's no more un-futureproof purcache at this moment IMO than a $400-$500 GeForce2 Ultra or ATi RAdeon 64MB VIVO.

Didnt we already go though this in anouther thread or two? V5 looks fine in giants in fact some peoples opinion found it looking better. To need a certain card to play a game like that is really funny. I say this thinking does anyone rip out there current card and whip in a Voodoo to use glide? I dont think so.

people, people, please....what are we talking about here?

the 5500 spanks the MX in Evolva. Don't start in on the bump mapping. The MX doesn't have the fillrate/throughput to do the Dot3 at a reasonable framerate (although that is a matter of opinion, of course)

With MDK2, just use the WickedGL drivers for the 5500. I got ~90 fps with the texture slider maxed, @ 1024x768x32.

The MX is a bargain card, and the 5500 makes it look like a bargain card. The only real advantage the MX has over the 5500 is future driver support.

It would of been cool if 3DFX had done a SLi trick where you can have 2 v5 pci's in the same system smp'd with an sli cable to get v5 6000 out of the whole the deal. :(

Robo-

The latest game version plays much faster then the bench runs. The benchmark is based on the original release of the game(which only supported Dot3 if it was bundled with a GF board). Since then they have increased the performance significantly(up ~50% with a T&L board). Besides that, Evolva looks like complete sh!t on a V5 anyway, or any other non Dot3 supporting board for that matter. The GF2MX has enough bandwith/fillrate to handle the game 800x600 32bit w/Dot3.

Sacrifice is up next;). Without hardware T&L the models fluctuate all the d@mn time with their poly counts, much smoother/constant models with T&L enabled.

Then there is Giants. Giants not only looks better on a GF/Radeon based board, it also runs much, much smoother. Speed up can see an average of 100% faster depending on the settings and unlike any other game I have seen to date, there is still a performance boost running @1600x1200 32bit with everything cranked(Dot3, environment, water) over 1600x1200 32bit without(no Dot3, no environment, no water) in the range of 30%-50% on my system.

Mykex-

"V5 looks fine in giants in fact some peoples opinion found it looking better."

Could you point to anyone who has seen the game running on both boards who would agree to that? I have seen comments on screenshots, noone that I know of that has seen it running on both boards(or the Radeon) has stated that it looks better on a V5.
