good deal. What sucks though is if the perfomances blow. I got a set for $60 (wasn't this one though) and I sold it as soon as I got through the first cd. Hearing people butcher his symphonies sucks.

For what it's worth, this isn't the famous Philips Complete Mozart they assembled for, I believe, the 200th anniversary of his death (1991). The performers here are lesser-known, mostly European groups and singers -- often Dutch, as Brilliant Classics is a super-budget reissue line connected (I believe) to a Dutch drugstore.

That said, I have a couple Brilliant Classics sets and they're quite good. Particularly at this price point.

As noted above, the performances on this set can be a bit spotty. Many are very good, but many are pretty average.

The Philips set is the best single set but it costs somewhere around $1,000 (if you're lucky enough to find it on eBay).

This set is in a bit of an odd market. It's not good enough for true Mozart aficionados. It is easily good enough to serve as an introduction to Mozart. But do you really want to introduce anyone to anything with 170 CDs?

If you don't require every single piece he ever wrote, I suggest you pick up boxed sets of various types of pieces. You can get sets of all of his symphonies, or piano concertos, or piano sonatas, etc. for very reasonable prices on Amazon (get them through Amazon affiliates for the best prices). By purchasing this way, you customize your "complete" set with each type of piece played by the best performer for that type of piece. Yes, you may pay more than this set, but the quality is much much better. I picked up all of his symphonies, piano concertos, and piano sonatas (in different sets) for a total of $80 delivered. That alone is a tremendous amount of music, played by the best, and will be a great way to determine if you want to follow through and get more. His operas are next on my list, as well as his string quartets/quintets.

Philips Complete Box Set

Is the Philips set mentioned in previous posts comprised of items #1-17 in the above link? If so, then I think I'd be interested in starting off with #10 myself. It'd sure cost a pretty penny to get the complete set!

Look like it's dead. If you want this set, be patient, as it goes on sale for this price frequently. The folks at FW and SD religiously post the sales on the set.

And for the Philips set, see the above post (it is indeed comprised of the 17 boxed sets linked to in the prior post). Insanely expensive brand new. You can save a lot of money by purchasing through the affiliates, especially if you're willing to get used sets (I've had pretty decent luck with used sets through affiliates. But still very expensive.

Thanks for the reply. I had never seen it listed before, but will start watching FW. What is SD? From the comments the CD's would be good for use in the car and if some are too poor for even that use, at this price one could just junk them.
