Dead Motherboard?

So after installing HL2, my computer gradually started crashing....with a DING..click!.....DING..click! Followed by a 5 second lockup after each "click".

Now, my computer freezes on boot.... before I can even get into the BIOS. It freezes after the memcheck, and sometimes gets as far as displaying "checking for IDE drives", along with a floppy drive activity noise.

I have tried booting without any peripherials connected to eliminate the possibility of an IRQ conflict, and swapped out the RAM and PSU to no avail.

The only thing left I can think of is that I somehow contracted a boot virus, though I am unsure whether it would actually manifest itself without any HDD's connected. Or is the motherboard somehow bad / shorted on the case? I haven't tried reseating it yet, but am preparing to go hunting for a new now-obsolete Socket A mobo.

Has anyone ever had this problem before? I'm typing this from a friend's laptop....this quarter is going to not be a whole lot of fun if I'm stuck without a desktop.

In any case, if ANYONE has heard of it or knows what I might do, of if you can tell my mobo is bad, PLEASE PST or post here. Thanks!

Try to reset the CMOS - unplug the system, take out the battery for a few minutes.
Put battery back in.
plug in and retry

i am having this problem as i type this. my old mobo is sitting in the box waiting for an RMA... i put an order in for a new motherboard friday so hopefully i'll get to see it wednesday... but i was having this problem and i tried literally everything. i came to the conclustion that the mobo is botched.

Soo...... I really don't know what the heck is going on.

I thought my CPU might be overheating, so I reseated it, which because of my heatsink/fan (Zalman) required me to remove the mobo from the case.

Now, it doesn't even POST. In fact, I can only seem to even get it to make any kind of noise at all if I have no RAM in the System. If I have a stick of RAM in, but no Vcard, and of course no peripherials or IDE, it simply sits, and makes no noise whatsoever. But since it beeps on no RAM, I think I can safely assume my CPU is at least alive. But why no post now?

I have moved my mobo around, thinking it might be shorted, but it hasn't seemed to have any affect.

My mobo is a couple years old (A7N8X DELUXE) so I don't have any hope of an RMA, unless maybe I can find a faulty capaciter...

If anyone has any insights....? 😀

Well, if there is one thing I've learned with computers....

If it doesn't work the first time, do the same thing again. and again. Until it works. Now I'm back at stage 1, except I can get past the Detect IDE somehow....

Unfortunately, I get a BSOD UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME when I try to load recovery console....this means that I cannot get into the recovery console to fix my troubles. Any suggestions? 2xMaxtor SataRaid0 drives, fyi.

Dead RAID?
Experiment, you don't have much to lose at this point -
You could try reinstalling the drives/RAID with the same settings, but don't be too disappointed if it doesn't work.

recovery console (someone correct me if i'm wrong) wont read your sata raid0. It wont even read sata without drivers, will it?
