Dead Motherboard? CPU?

So, I sort of did something bad..

I just got a new e6400 Core 2 Duo and Gigabyte DS3 and have been playing around with overclocking the system. Managed to get a stable overclock of about 400 fsb, but then I did something stupid. I was tinkering with my ram timings and apparently put them too low. The system failed to boot, and when I reset it went to a screen that said something about invalid flash bios (I had previously flashed bios to f3, and it had been fine and stable and I had not since touched the flash bios).

Now, when I boot, the case fans will power on and the graphics card seems to be getting power (an led is lit), but the cpu fan won't start (it clicks as though it's trying to, but never actually spins) and neither will my system, no beeps. The monitor gets no signal. I have tried clearing cmos and taking out the battery, but that seems to have done nothing. I have powered another system with the CPU and I get a beep out of that.

So, I have to think that it's either the CPU or the motherboard. Any ideas?

Wow... Did you even bother to see if the system would handle your needs before you decided to overclock?

I'd be thinking RMA time, most likely for your processor... if you're lucky. You might as well remove the heatsink / fan and see if there is any visible damage (do this while the power is OFF)...

Hopefully you have some salvagable components when all is said & done.

What do you mean? It's an e6400 processor and a DS3 motherboard with some XMS2 Corsair 800 mhz DDR2 ram. I don't think I'm asking too much of out it. I've never heard of ram timings frying a system.

Sounds like the BIOS has somehow become messed up. Wierd.

If this is the case, you will need to either:

a) Get the motherboard 'fixed' professionally. This will involve one of the next two options.
b) Buy and fit a new BIOS chip flashed with a working BIOS.
c) Hotflash the BIOS with another board the same as yours. This is risky.
