I have had an smc router for the past 2.5 years. It has a great easy to follow interface and i found the tech support helpful although hard to understand at times.

cat5e will do it, but i think cat6 will get you higher speeds if you can surpass the cat5e bandwidth

i'm wiring my basement with cat6 and will use it for my components

I've bought many items from buy.com and my only bad experiance was a few years ago when there was some inventory count mixup (ie the item was improperly marked as in stock). Other than that I typicailly get my items in 3-5 days.

My experiences with buy.com have been good, with the exception of the slow shipping. It usually takes between 5 and 10 days from when I order to when the merchandise is delivered. I guess the fast shipping at NewEgg has spoiled me.

I have been using the SMC 8505T gigabit switch for the last 6 months, and I have been very well pleased with it.

Yeah, I it has plenty of space around it. Having dealt with other switches, i know they get warm but this case along with that whine just makes me pause. If yours is warm, then I'll accept it. I do acknowledge though that I am a noise freak and little sounds like this "whine" attracted my attention as I'm particularly sensitive.

I have had good luck with buy.com and buy.com rebates. For me shipping has been very fast, most of ground shipments come next day since I live in Socal.

buy.com did with this product what they always do, leave the item up for sale as "in stock usually ships in 1-2 business days", then take far more orders than they had stock. After I ordered one, a couple days later it was STILL showing "in stock" but now even days later still "sent to warehouse" status for the order, most certainly NOT 1-2 business days because they don[t' even have any now.

They leave you hanging, checking back and wondering, maybe it will come and maybe it'll be a month or longer. Maybe you'll cancel and maybe they'll ship it regardless, AFTER you cancelled it. 18 months ago buy.com wasn't too bad but today, never buy something you actually need by any particular timeframe, order at least a month before you'll need it.

FINALLY they have updated their website so it shows out of stock... deal is now dead, shame we didn't know it when they sold out rather than days after the fact.

Whats the difference between these and dells?, the not holding a candle part specifically?

I hopped on a SC420 deal they have gigabit ethernet built in.

Right now Dell has:

8 port 2608 for $89 free shipping NO REBATES

24 port 2624 for $219 free shipping NO REBATES

16 port is no deal same price as 24 port at 219

Plus the 2624 has Fiber Media Support , 1 SFP fiber slot (combo with 1000BaseT) , if thats what you need.

Or is the dell stuff crap?

These Dell switches doesn't support jumbo frames.

the thing about the dell's AFAIK is that they don't have jumbo frame support which you can read about in this thread


edit: nm, i thought it was in this thread. anyways, jumbo frames allow you to send more data per packet, thereby allievating 100% CPU Utilization while transferring large files over non-jumbo frame networks.

to take advantage of jumbo frame, all involved devices must support jumbo frames

Jumbo frames are best, but keep in mind that similarly, max performance can be had from those other non-jumbo switches by choosing the biggest frame size they DO support, many might accept over 1500 default.
