My dvd burner just broke so $70 for a dual format 8x burner sounds pretty sweet. But double layer burners are just around the corner. Decisions, decisions...

Yes! I love these DVD drive sales at OM, now I will be able to replace all the DVD drives in my three PCs with 8x burners. Though I will need an additional address for the third rebate.

Yes, the time for double layer burners is getting closer as BenQ will have the DW830A dual layer DVD recorder available in the market in April, but I belive that a firmware upgrade to change a current 8x single layer burners to burn dual layer disc will show up sometime in the future. Pioneer recently demonstrate dual layer DVD recording using a firmware upgraded Pioneer 4x DVR-106 drive.

Wednesday, 25 February 2004,
BenQ to demonstrate 16x and DVD9 DVD burner in CeBIT 2004

BenQ will demonstrate the upcoming DW1600A 16x DVD burner and the DW830A dual layer DVD recorder in CeBIT 2004.
The DW830A will be available in the market in April, 2004. The second generation of this drive is expected in the third quarter of 2004 and will probably support both DVD formats (DVD+R/-R).

The DVD+R9 drive will support the Walking-OPC II technology, offering real-time monitoring of the CD/DVD burning process for guaranteed recording quality. The specifications of the drive also include an 8MB buffer, and 8x recording for (4.7GB), 4x for DVD+RW, 12x DVD-ROM reading and 2.4x DVD+R9 burning.

Further plans of the company include the 16x DVD+R burner, the DW1600A, also offering dual layer burning. Available in third quarter of 2004, the drive uses the appropriate technology to maintain 16x DVD+R recording, which is the physical top level for DVD recording, with a rotational speed fixed at 10800 rpm ~ 180 Hz ~ 200 km/h.

Additional hardware requirements would include correct bit clock timing, laser pulse timing, high resolution writing strategy, high performance servo requirements Robustness to media spread/drive spread and temperatures.

The specifications of the DW1600A inlude the impressive 16x4x16/2,4 (DVD+R9) and 40x24x40 CD-RW.

For those Khypermedia..isn't there a way to tell the difference between BenQ and Cyberdrive.....

something about one being made in Malaysia (BenQ) and the other in China (Cyberdrive)

I may be way off here........

Well, I just got back from the OM that I bought my NEC 2500A from this past Sunday. I had wanted a Lite-On because of the bit setting in their FW upgrade, but all they had were the NEC's. Guess I should just bite the bullet and get another NEC and hope they have a new FW to do just that.

You can order a Pacific Digital drive through a phone order and if you get a rebadged drive that you don't want you can return it to your local OM store.

The Micro Advantage does not show the $40 IR online. Maybe they will apply it if you call for price adjustment ...

Call back and tell the CSR that the Pacific Digital 8x SKU #20678401 is listed on the front page of this weeks ad for $109.99 after a $40 intant rebate and you would like the CSR to price match the price in the ad. If the CSR says that the ad is for the Khypermedia 8x drive point out that the ad does not list the name of any drive just the SKU numbers of 3 8x drives and one of the SKU numbers is for the 8x Pacific Digital. If the CSR still wouldn't give you the $109.99 price you can either ask to talk to the supervisor or hang up, then call back later and talk to a different CSR.

My OM only had PD's with serial #'s 41A4****

So, these would most likely be NEC2500's? Anyone have any more details on this serial #?

i read somewhere that the dual-layer ability will take more than a firmware update.. that the pioneer they tested was different somehow...

I bought mine that had those serial #'s and it waas a NEC2500A. As long as it starts with a "41" and then prceeds with letters and numbers afterwards you should be safe.

Yup that's an nec :) I just hope someone comes out with bitsetting for it soon. The write quality of my nec is much better than my liteon 811s, not that the liteon is horrible.

Yes, you should be able to PM the price in the ad by phone order, but remember Micro Advantage only uses rebadged BTC drives.

For you boys that are getting LDW-851S make sure to put this drive as a master, make sure dma is enabled.
There is new firmware out as well, although not officially supported by lite on at this time? Anyhow, some knowledgeable folks over Here

Hitting around 7.6X on my read rate maxxed about halfway through a dvd, anyone doing better?
Haven't burned one yet so i'll report back later with that if there's any interest.
