Dead Laptop?

I have an HP zd7168cl laptop, about 5 years old. Yesterday, while innocuously browsing the internet, it made a zap noise and shut off. It gave no response immediately after, and had an odd, burnt smell to it. I left it unplugged and untouched overnight. Today I plugged it in and the ac power and battery charging lights in the front came on like normal. When I pressed the power button however, absolutely nothing happens. Not sure what part it would be, if it can be replaced, or how I would go about solving this problem?

Remove battery and unplug AC adapter. Press power button for 5-10 seconds. Plug AC back in. Try powering on.

Powers on: Power off, put battery in. Still work with battery in? Good to go.

Doesn't power on: Going to cost far more than the computer is worth to repair.

The zap noise and burnt smell are bad signs.
