Dead Laptop

I know ther is help out there.

I have a Compaq laptop, several years old, runs xp home. It will suddenly go blank, and won't restart. I have removed and reseated the battery, to no avail. I brought it to a local shop, and they left it overnight with battery out and power cord disconnected. When they put the battery and cord back in it booted up fine. Tech guy said it might be the connector between the ac/dc and the mobo? I wish I could remember the name of the component he referred to. Is there some type of card or connection point that could go bad and be replaced? To continue, the laptop worked fine for a couple of weeks, and then went blank again. After a couple of hours without the power cord or battery, it booted up fine again. Any thoughts that either coincide with or differ from my tech guys diagnosis? Thanks in advance.
