Dead HP Z220 (won't post)

I was simply in the BIOS and did a reset to default and save. Computer is now dead. Won't post. No beeps, no keyboard, won't even wake up the monitor. I tried everything. The power switch is the only thing that works and system fans run at full speed after 30 seconds. Is there any known issues with HP workstations? Core i7 3770.

Any way to confirm if motherboard or power supply? I see used Z220 boards on eBay. Or try to harvest CPU with and turn it into a "build my own".

I was a stable machine and was very happy with it. But 3 years was a very short life for a premium product.

Tried the "Clear CMOS" jumper, if it has one?

Tried pulling the RAM, and see if it beeps? (If you've got a speaker.)

Edit: If it beeps with no RAM, that's a sign that the CPU and the BIOS init routines are running OK. You might have a chance of fixing it. If there are no beeps (just dead), when you pull the RAM, then you're probably going to need some new parts.

Note that the power cord should be UNPLUGGED when adding or removing RAM to consumer PC motherboards.

Thanks. No beeps given with no RAM in machine. I also pulled the CMOS battery overnight.

I built a new i5-7500 system and boot drive from z220 booted perfectly and is running like nothing happened.

Still thinking about what to do with the i7-3770. I miss the 8 threads in task manager.

I am having the same issue, my different is when I remove the RAM I get the error beeps. As VirtualLarry has mentioned, I might have a chance. I hope he or anyone on this forum can give me some suggestions as to what I should try next.

Try other RAM, and maybe a "CLR CMOS" (there should be a little jumper, that you might have to move between three pins, one setting labeled "normal" and one setting labeled "clear". Move it to "clear", wait two seconds, then move it back to "normal". If it's just a two-pin header, then just place a jumper cap over it for a couple of seconds, then remove it. Do this with the power off and unplugged from the wall.

Note that clearing your CMOS, may make your OS disk unbootable, if it resets the IDE/AHCI/RAID setting of your primary disk controller. You will have to enter BIOS setup and re-setup this setting, according to how your OS was installing. (This mostly applies to Windows installs.)

All good advice by Larry.. If you have a dedicated video card, make sure it is set as Primary adapter. Good luck!

I am operating with the on board display port for graphics. Regarding the BIOS pins I have four of them and the green jumper is originally set to the farthest right position, no labels. I will work on getting a photo to post in the next couple hours. Thank you so far with your help, and immediate responses, I look forward to figuring this out. Just a note, I do have other RAM to try for this system and I have also gone ahead and ordered a used replacement board from ebay as it was only $34.00.

Three years is industry standard for prebuilts.. Count yourself fortunate it lasted that long.

Good luck with the new board!

I had tried another video card and was looking up the bios reset switch when I landed on HP's web site. I checked the warranty status on HP web site. It had two weeks left! They sent a tech to replace the system board and it is working again. (now I have two machines..., but using the new one)
