Buy.com deal is DEAD, price is up to $7.99

I got sick of seeing a 3' optical cable at Radio Shack for $20 so I decided to look online.

Cheapest I could find is a 6' Gamester PS2 Optical Cable at buy.com. I hooked it up today to my DVD player and stereo reciever and it works just as well as the $20 optical cable.

Buy.com shipped it via USPS Media Mail and I recieved it in 2 days from the time I purchased it. Very fast considering it was Media Mail and it was free.

BTW, the optical cable shipped from Memphis, TN.

If you want pictures just let me know.

correct :)

Just because it says PS2 optical cables doesn't mean it _only_ works on the PS2.

Like I said in my post, I hooked it up to my DVD player (RCA) and my Stereo Reciever (Sharp).
I don't even own a PS2 :)

What exactly is optical cable? What does it look like? What does it enhance?

Thanks!

Not all cables are the same. There are different connectors, though that shouldn't be an issue here since we're strictly talking game consoles (I assume they all use the same connectors).

The other thing: The better ones have a spring loaded mechanism that holds the cable firmly in place indefinitely. The cheaper ones just snap into place. Theoretically the snap in style cables can eventually loosen and you start to get errors. Do we know if it's spring loaded or not?

I'm not an audio buff or anything, but here's what I know.

An optical cable is a cable that connects electronic components together. Only works to connect audio.

Looks like any other cable I guess. There's little plastic pieces to protect the ends of the cable. You need to take them off before you plug the cable in.

It enhances the sound. I believe it's one of the clearest and best ways to connect audio components.

They're definitely not spring loaded, though neither was the $20 cable at Radio Shack.

i have a home theater system that has optical connections and there are no spring loading connections on it at all, just push the cable in. and yes it is for audio only, it is mainly for dolby digital 5.1 connections. the sound is far superior to hooking up via RCA cables.

How do you know it's 6 feet ? I didn't see anything specifying if this is a PS2 cable and how long this cable is.

The only optical cable that says PS2 is $23.99 here.

I already purchased the cable and have it in my hands.

I'm about 6' tall so I held the cable up and it's the same length I am.

I thought it was only going to be 3', but it was a pleasent suprise to see it's 6' :D

In my case, I needed to connect my DVD player to my receiver so I could get the DD5.1/DTS output of movies. You only get stereo if you connect them with the RCA audio cables.

Would this be applicable to the XBOX as well?

Actually, is it necessary or worth it?

Thanks guys!

i have an XBOX and must say it is very much worth getting the advanced video pack for the xbox and hooking it up that way, most of the xbox games have dolby digital 5.1 built into them and it rocks to play a game in full dolby 5.1. it costs some $$ to do but it is worth it at least to me.

On the back of the box it says "Compatible with Xbox High Definition A/V too!" or something similar to that.

It's up to you on whether it's necessary or worth it. If you want the best sound coming out of your Xbox, then yes, it is necessary.

hclarkjr:

So does this mean, solely the optical cable will not work? I'm not seeing how it would buy just buying the optical cable, becuase the Red, Yellow, and White all come into a plug that plugs into the XBOX.

Is the A/V Definition Pack the only way to go for Dolby Digital?

Thanks!

yes, that is the only way you are going to hook up the optical cable, you will not need the RCA cables then, also on AV pack is connection for Svideo hookup for your TV which will give you better picture too provided your TV has Svideo input

I'm in, I needed one for my PS2. I personally prefer the digital coax for DD/DTS sound but there's lots of DVD players which only have optical connectors. You'll hear people argue all day about which is better. Optical is more fragile and some tend to loosen over time. I doubt most people would be able to tell the difference in a blind test.

This is a HOT DEAL!!!! Even if you don't have a purpose for one, order one! You'll probably need one sooner or later and Yzzim is not lying, it's AT LEAST 20 bucks for the short crap in any store.

I'm getting 2 even though I have no need for any more currently, I know I may need them later.

i agree this is an excellent price for an optical cable

i got 2 or 3 of these PS2 optical cables from a video game retailer that had them on clearance for about this same price. they have been working GREAT between my computer, receiver, and minidisc recorder/player.

the ends on these cheaper cables are all plastic and somewhat flimsy but hey they work!

Hmmmm, for $4.99 I might have to give this a shot. Thanks.
