This is another play everything DVD player, according to vcdhelp.com. About reliability, i have no clue. I have had a Sony DVD player already, just pick up this one in case i need to record a dvd or need to play a DVD with region other than 1, or any DVD that my sony won't play.

From the description:

Dolby® Digital and DTS® compatible output
Analog audio out (dual)

So---no digital audio out?

Like I have said in prior posts, the Apex 3201 and the Pioneer DV343 are the only DVD players of the 8 or so I have tested that will play my home burnt SVCD's flawlessly. This is a nice deal.

Does it officially support SVCDs or merely play them? I want to be able to RW/FF with my SVCDs which is something my shinsonic won't do. My shinsonic supports VCD, but it will play SVCDs if you select the raw video in the menu, but I cannot pause or rw/ff since it doesn't officially support it. It sucks when you have to get up for a minute a miss part of whatever is in there.

The Apex 3201's I and my parents have plays, FF, Rewinds, etc.. flawlessly all my Pinnacle Express and Nero created SVCD's burned on all sorts of cheapie CD-R's and CD-RW's. The menus also work properly.

picking it up at Sears now, just receive the ready to pickup email. This unit is a lot easier to hack, no firmware update or anything, just use the hidden menu, and all units should work, regardless of serial numbers.

I have two ... they've been playing pretty well till I started watching some Hong Kong DVDs (A Man Named Hero and Shaolin Soccer). Those were the two movies that would freeze from time to time towards the end of the movie. Once in a while I would get the play symbol on the TV during normal watching of DVDs ... whithout pressing any remote or unit buttons ...

All in all good value though and I'm happy with it ... got mine compusa when they had their deal for around 50 bucks

BTW ... You gotta check out Shaolin Soccer ... Kick @ss movie .. great effects and lots fun humor wonderful ending.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that they play my VCDs SVCDs and CVDs very well.

So, what is the difference between having component out and progressive scan? I would be more than happy to jump on this tonight or tomorrow, but I don't know if I should just keep shopping for progressive scan since I do have a Samsung 16/9 HD

Any ideas or good deals ($100 or less) I can get for one?

I know this might be asking much for $60 player, but does this player have a built in converter so that you can play PAL movies on an NTSC Tv and vice versa?

I hear the quality control on these units is pretty poor. What are the chances that I get a bad unit?

Is buying online from Sears asking for trouble if I need to return it? [I don't have one near me]

Oh yeah, I'm not too interested in VCD's...I only have one or two, but I just want good DVD quality. Is this player for me? I have a budget for a player around the $100-mark to replace my laptop as the DVD player just so I don't need to mess with cables whenever I want to watch a DVD on the tv.

Quality picture? Sound? Reliable?

Is Apex for me or something else? At the price I hope someone says yes and means it :)

edit: oh yeah, edit that first link -- it has a sesion id

AHhAHHA....I loved that movie, and I'm not even Chinese. I must've seen it at least 7-10 times.

Anyways, I guess I might pick one up. Can always give it as a gift if anything. Does anyone know if they make any Region-free or hackable DVD players that also have Progressive Scan?

From what I can see of the manual, the unit has a coax digital out, not a fiber optic digital out.

Is there anyone offering this player for cheaper? My loacal Sears is always willing to price-match, even online stores. :)

how is the reliabilty on this?

2 years ago, I bought 2 different Apex players. After just over 1 year of usage, both died. Maybe they're better now, but I'm no longer willing to take another chance... That's my $0.02.

for video yes there is only coax digital and s-video out. For audio there is RCA analog and optical digital(DTS, Dolby 5.1) out only.

Thanks, ordered one and picked it up at Sears one hour later. Now to see if there's a way to return that Apex 1500 to amazon that I ordered last week...
