I'll bet he didn't "go" this way. Murdered, disposed of rather creatively. Real or not? Not sure, but I would say it's definitely not out of the realm of possibility.

Exactly, and as far as being "creative"; just google "body found in barrel".
It seems to be a rather common method.

Killed, stuffed in the barrel, slightly filled with cement (for weight), then dropped in a lake. Water caused him to expand.

Look closely, that concrete is at the top. You can see his hips to the right, and his left leg is towards us. (And duct tape in the concrete/head area.)
