HIS 4850 $79 AR

8-3-09 UPDATE: NOW $129

rear-venting design (its just like people)

UPDATE- got my card in, flawless install, but this is a long card. Good news is that it is very quiet. Even though I was going from a passively cooled 7600GS, I can barely hear this thing.

Hm how much could I overclock this? Could I get it to 4870 speeds? Would I have memory bandwidth for 19x12? My 9800GT's memory is clocked at 1000Mhz right now too...

The 4850 is not a fabulous overclocker - I would not expect it to leapfrog your 9800GT at all. It's a decent $80 card, but I wouldn't go overboard on it.

I got the saphire 4850 a few months back. I went from a 8800gs 384 meg overclocked to 8800gt equivalent (non-oced) and 19" monitor to a 4850 oced to 780/1085 and 28" monitor and noticed a fairly dramatic difference. The 8800gs in Farcry2 with lowered rez at 1650x1050 with medium settings was getting around mid 40s fps but 4850 at 1920x1200 max dx9 settings was getting around mid 40s fps. Though the 512 meg memory does help. It was well worth the 86 bucks for me to hold me over till dx11 cards.

I would base your decision more on the size of your monitor. The 9800gt is a good card.

my 2 cents

Wrong, it is faster than the 9800GT: Link.

Whether the performance increase is worth $90 is up to the OP though, although I'd go for it for the excellent cooler on it.

I never said it was not faster. I said "I would not expect it to *leapfrog* your 9800GT at all." And, by leapfrog, I meant basically go to the next level. The 4850 isn't going to do that with the 9800GT. Look at the link you provided, the FPS's aren't THAT much more impressive. Yes, it is faster, of course it is, but not dramatically so. It seems a waste to do an incremental upgrade, and I figured he was going for more than a few FPS increase at the high res range.

Wrong! It is slower than the 9800GT by a huge margin. LINK

More stubborn than a mule!

Is it just me or has 4850s gone back up in prices... I remember they were hitting lows of 75-85 before.

I'm kinda in the same boat... I have a 9600GS0 and bought another one to sli, but I can't fit them both on the MB without losing pci slots I need. So I'm thinking of selling both of the 9600GSO's and getting one faster card. My monitor res is 16x12, but I don't use AA so that helps alot with any card. So I'm thinking 4850, 4870 or GTX 260 depending on which is the best deal. BTW, how much are 9600GSO's worth if I sell them?

I'm hoping to sell my 8800gs for around 35-40 bucks if I'm lucky though it is only 384 megs. I might just keep it for an HTPC. Don't expect much but 2 of them should almost cover the cost of this card.

Am I the only one who appreciates this fart joke??? Because it's really funny, LOL.

Thanks - I was inspired when I sat next to a group of twenty 10 year old boys on the subway a few days ago. One started to laugh hysterically, and then...OMFG.
