My only question is can you use this like a normal business computer?
I mean it says server but could it act like a desktop pc?
My dad need 4 PCs for the office so thats why I'm asking.

Thx,
J.

Servers and regular computer really aren't any different when you talk about a low end server like the Poweredge 600SC. Just think of it as a regular workstation with non-upgradable video and extremely good reliability. Just remember that you have to put your own operation system on their, and some servers might not run correctly if you don't use Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional... the Home version's may not work so well.

My concern with this deal is the part of the rebate form that states -

"* If you received a Free Memory Upgrade with the purchase of this system, you are not eligible for the mail-in rebate."

Would a 'free' second hard drive be considered a "Free Memory Upgrade," voiding the rebate?

Why? Hard Drives aren't considered memory. Also it lists 3 promotions the memory upgrade/free 2nd hard drive/free shipping so they are all valid.

"FREE Double Memory OR Up to $100 Mail-in Rebate!" I dont' think you will get free double memory and 100$ as well

Instructions for this deal are:

128MB DDR, 200MHz, 1X128MB DIMM (don't do free upgrade to 256MB, otherwise you lose $100 MIR)

Your choice. I chose the $100, especially 256MB sticks are getting cheaper by the day. To iterate above, this is not a gaming rig. It's a server for files, email, etc. and you need to load an O/S. But 240G hard drive space is too good to pass up!

This is an excellent deal, especially with the 80 or 120GB HDDs.

How long will it last?

LoL

Show me a "regular computer" that has integrated gigabit ethernet and 64 BIT PCI slots for the same price and I'll buy it.

What makes this a "server" is that it has a server MB with server qualitly features like bad graphics and great I/O (for a PC).

Would I want this as an office PC? Probably not. Your graphic options will be very limited. It has a built in ATI rage pro 8mb graphics and I am not sure if a PCI graphics card will work with the serverworks chipset

Also an other consideration if you are using these as office computers: I have not seen the 600C but my experience in the past is that Dell servers are LOUD. Looking at the back of this it has a 120mm fan and probably makes quite a racket.

OTOH if you want a cheap gig capable fileserver this would be a fantastic value.
(only not-hot: 250W PSU.....)

This is pretty insane - almost like the dimension 4550 with lcd for $600 or so. I just speced a system with RAID card(50% off too!!!!($150)) and 2x120GB and 2.4GHz processor for $609+tax

Can someone clarify the specs on the 1.8ghz celeron, is it really 533fsb??? and 25kb cache?

I was wondering about that myself. The ones I have seen were 400MHz/128kB. I think Dell mixed it up with the old PIII celerons that in the end had 256kB. Their PIV is also listed as 256/533, but they have actually 512/533 ;)

BTW after all the rebates the price difference between a 1.8GHz celeron and a system with PIV 2.4 is about $90.

I need some help in the decision from you more technical people. I am going to be using a server for my small business and not sure what to get. For $200 I can upgrade from a P4 2.4 with TWO 80 gig IDE to a XEON 2.0 with TWO 73 gig (10K) SCSI drives. Anyone have any comments on if this may be worth the difference? What exactly is the difference between a 'standard' P4 processor and a Xeon processor? I looked around and could not find anything. Thanks again guys for supporting the HOTTEST, HOT DEALS site on the net.

Comparitively, I don't know how well the Northwoods perform against the Xeons, but I know your business will definitely benefit from the SCSI drives as opposed to the IDE drives. Considering one 73GB 10K RPM Ultra 320 68pin goes for over $460 normally, that is a hell of steal. Honestly, I'm thinking of buying this combo just for the SCSI drives.

Yeah I know what you mean. If colo webhosting was cheaper ($50/mo) I'd buy one of these in a heart beat.

Rossman, just think of the deal you'd get alone by getting a server with 2 73GB 10K RPM Ultra 320 68pin drives. ;) You know you're going to buy this, stop delaying :)

Wow. This is getting tempting. Might get the 2GHz Xeon with the 73GB 10K Ultra320 drives. I'll probably sell one of the drives on E*ay for $300 or so, bringing the mighty system down to about $315 after rebate.

Insane.

Come on, only $640 after MIR for all that goodness Rossman. Come on, just a few clicks and it could be yours. All that space, and all that speed. Slap in some nice 512mb PC2100 sticks for another $130/2 sticks, and you've got quite a powerful server there. SCSI goodness, Xeon power, 1GB of RAM. All for less then 800$ after everythings said and done. Just do it :D
