I can recommend the DIR-655 based on personal experience. We have five computers on a LAN-- three on the ground floor in the lab and two on the second floor. The LAN was originally set up using a D-Link four port 10/100 DI-604 router. Three of the ports were ethernet cabled to the three computers in the lab (which is where the cable service comes in) and one was cabled to a Buffalo WAP between the floors to connect the two upstairs computers. Recently I wished to add a server in the lab for all of the computers on the LAN. Since all of the ports on the DI-604 were in use, instead of buying a 10/100 switch to get another port for the server I purchased a DIR-655 instead. It has four gigabit ethernet ports and a 802.11 b/g/n wireless link. The four ports are taken up by the three computers and the server in the lab, but I found that I could dispense with the Buffalo WAP since the signal strength from the DIR-655 provides a very good link to the two computers on the upper floor. The firmware in the HP NIC's in those machines always report either Very Good or Excellent signal strength. That was not possible before.

I just measured the download speed a couple of minutes ago on the computer I am working at in the lab and it showed a 26 ms ping time to Los Angeles and a download speed of 21.56 Mbps -- That is Comcast cable and a Motorola SB5120 connected to the DIR-655. The lab computers all have Netgear GA311 gigabit NIC's

So my experience with the DIR-655 has been very good.

The DIR-655 is a great router. It came out in 2005 or 2006 and I got it right after it hit the shelves and have had no problems whatsoever with it.

I've used MANY different routers w/ DD-WRT, and this D-Link, even without DD-WRT support, ranks right up there with them (and is the one I'm currently using and have been for awhile). It's one of the few that have a gigabit switch w/ jumbo frame support. Firmware is rock solid too. No complaints, worth the price.
