dead crt monitor or refresh rate too high?

Earlier this evening, I was working on the old 'puter [w/ 3yr old 17" CRT monitor] when I smelled a burning smell. I looked at the box - everything OK. I looked at the monitor, and it seemed a little warmer than usual. At that moment, I saw through one of the vents that there was some small part inside that was red-hot. I quickly flipped it off. (I'm typing this from another screen.)

As I said, the monitor is about 3 yrs old. It's an e-machines, and has been used pretty hard for the past ~2 yrs. I keep the refresh rate at 85khz I think (whatever it was, it was as high as XP said it could go, as any flicker bothers me.)

To my question: could the high refresh rate be the issue, or is it just dead?

Thanks!

the high refresh rate could have caused it, but it is most likely dead now. if you feel like replacing that one component, that might be able to fix it.

thx - could you recommend any of the [preferably cheaper] 17" lcds at newegg? I was looking, but I'm not very up on that sort of stuff. I don't do any gaming, so ghosting shouldn't be an issue.

I'd look for some dell deals, they seem to have a lot of coupons going around.
What is your price range?
