i was installing a new motherboard and cpu today. i grounded myself and installed everything properly, made sure the cpu was in the right way, and made sure the hsf made contact. as soon as i booted up my system it smelled like something was burning. i quickly turned it off and took the hsf off. the cpu definitely smells pretty burnt up, but no visual signs. it also wasnt even warm to the touch, and i took the hsf off pretty quick. anyone have any ideas about what happened here? i have never had a doa cpu, so i dont know what the cause of this may be, if i killed it somehow. I have a s754 3200 with a scythe ncu-2500 with a 12cm fan and an epox 8kda motherboard (wich i hope didnt die during the burning of the cpu).

So, with your experience, I am assuming it was a different smell than the one of new hardware being fired up the first time? Did the computer POST and everything OK? I am pretty sure that all A64 mobos use the thermal shutdown that is built into the processor, but I think this is only active after POST. Not sure how to help you after that, except maybe trying a different CPU if this one is not posting.
