Dead CPU?

I just changed out the cooler on my AMD 2500 from the stock hsf to a SLK800A w/ a thermaltake Smart Fan 2 and arctic silver 3. At first I tried putting that little thermal probe under the CPU, attaching it by the little stickers that come w/ the fan... But when I got it all put back together, the darn thing won't boot. So I took out the probe, put it all back together... it still won't boot! When I hit the power button, all the fans turn on, including the smart fan 2, I hear the HD spin up.... but then nothing, blank screen. I cleared the CMOS, and tried holding insert while hitting the power button.....

Any other ideas? What should I do?

Take the CPU out and see what it does. Also, I've never used that fan, but shouldn't the thermal probe be placed on the side of the CPU core, where it won't interfere with heat transfer, but will get an accurate temp?

Yeah, I tried switching back to the stock HSF, but it still won't do anything.

All lights come on, HD light comes on for a bit, DVD reads a tad, then just nothing. Can't get any response from the keyboard.... Can't get HD lights to come on by pressing ALT-CTRL-DEL or the start button and scrolling up and over... I'm doing this blind, since I have no video... but I'm thinking this isn't a video problem... I reseated vid card, ram, and CPU...

man , it sounds like you fryed your chip from insuficant contact with the CPU and the heatsink.
At first I tried putting that little thermal probe under the CPU, attaching it by the little stickers that come w/ the fan...
under the cpu ? or under the heatsink ON TOP of the cpu ?
take the chip out , clean off the thermal paste and take a good look at the edges of the core . see if there is little black marks or lines radiating out from it.
you can also try it in another comp if you have one available.
good luck
