Just a fyi

The product must be activated prior to rebate redemption. Activation will require a valid credit card however your subscription may be cancelled at
anytime. Total Defense will verify that the product has been activated.

ended at 12pm eastern time, also you had to sign up for some security supscription. Seems like Microcenter's deal is more "fair"

TD has been pushing various products with Total Defense rebates, which require activation of the software, along with a credit card number, which I assume Total Defense will use to automatically renew its subscription.

The software use to be CA (Computer Associates). Quite a few vocal 1 star reviews on Newegg.

This is only a deal if you're willing to deal with the massive headache of meeting the rebate requirements. It wants your cc# for auto-renewal service and no real easy way to cancel judging by the complaints.

How to win friends, get this rebate, and feel awesome.

Step one Buy it
Step two When you get the software, DON'T INSTALL IT.
Step three Activate the key online. Use a prepaid card with more than 1$ on it.
Step four Print the activation email, use that for the rebate paperwork. Submit anything else as needed.
Step Five Wait until the rebate processes and the AMEX prepaid card is delivered.
Step Six Cancel OR Spend the prepaid card you used to activate down to 0. (You have 1 year)

SUCCESS!

Thanks for the good advice, Termie and DeadMilkman, I appreciate it.

Both processors still in stock as of this moment!

I can't seem to find any info regarding activation without installation on Total Defense's website--does anyone know how?

DeadMilkman's advice seems to be good. The only thing is I doubt you'll get the registration without actually installing the software. I did go in on the deal. The plan is to install the software on a laptop that I'm going to wipe clean anyway (delete partition).

I had the same thought, install it on the machine that is going to be retired. I don't want to bother to save a few $$'s in tax. I have a Microcenter close by.

Sorry I've been away. A few clarifications!

You perform can activation WITHOUT installing via their website. (Use the provided information in the box))
www.totaldefense.com/premium/

I'd bet that doesn't work, I'd guess the pre-authorize for more than $1

The credit card is just used for the next year's renewal. Every previous offer the pre-authorization has been only 1$.

Once again my recommendations:
I would HIGHLY suggest using a prepaid/gift/virtual card and not your usual credit card.
Do not cancel until after you get the rebate. If they give you hassle, spend the card given to them to 0.
