Dead Computer? Or just dead parts?

So I have a computer that I've been leaving on essentially 24/7 for a couple years now... so I know the parts are getting old, etc.

A couple weeks ago, I noticed that the video was starting to freeze up, or get yellow splotches on it. Then, it started crashing my computer. I'd turn it off, let it cool down, and then it'd be okay for a while.

Then just recently, it completely stopped working. When I fire up the power supply, I get a high pitched whine, but nothing happens when I hit the power switch, no fans, no POST, nothing.

I did notice that my video card fan was completely jammed and there was a faint hint of smoke.

My first reaction is to think that the video card is fried, but I'm curious if I need to replace everything (if a fried video card would domino mobo, etc.)

I don't want to rebuild a whole new computer if I don't need to, but I also don't want to spend weeks replacing a part at a time, guessing what's broken and what's not...

My guesses right now are video card and PSU. But possibly the mobo too...

Any suggestions/ideas? I'm not at home right now, so I can't give any exact details about what kind of parts I have, but I'll try to get answers as I go home.

how dirty are your components? would definitely start with replacing the gpu as a first if your smelling smoke from it.

Replace the power supply. If that doesn't fix it and you don't want to replace parts one at a time then just build a new computer. You can use the power supply in your new computer.
