Compaq Evo n400c subnotebook for $849 at PCMall.com!!!!!

The 128MB/20GB model sells for:
$1440 here,
$1900 here,
$1900 on Compaq's website!
Used, refurbished, and off-lease n400c's (with only 128MB/20GB) sell for more on eBay!

CNET's review: 8 out of 10 stars and 80% user recommended (the negative votes aren't very insightful anyways)

edit: Get a FREE printer after MIR too :D

Does anyone else think this is an great deal?

Thanks iamme,
Not sure about this...
Under technical specs, it shows having only a 20gig HD and not a 30 gig as it indicates in the product summary.
Also, no cd-rom.

look for sony slim series, they come with cd rom and floppy for about $ 999

also if you get this you must install prog over the network (if you dont buy the cd rom and floppy)

Whenever you bought this compaq has to remember to bought expansion unit because this unit does not come with CD-rom or floppy drive. This notebook is ok and the expansion unit consist of CD-rw and floppy will cost you aroung $400-$600

I called about the 20GB/30GB typo, and the CSR said the 20GB was a typo. They offer a 128MB/20GB model for about $40 less, but I think it's worth the extra price.

I also mentioned that it doesn't come w/ an optical drive. I have an external firewire CD-RW, so it works for me :)

This doesn't have firewire ports, unfortunately. Is there a way to install Windows XP over a network? I can't stand Win98SE--I at least would like to have Win2k running on this lappy if I get it. Any suggestions about how to go about doing this? Is it possible to copy the WinXP disc onto the hard drive over the network and install it directly from the hard drive?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Oh yeah, does this come with a touchpad or a pointing stick?

And does it accept standard 168-pin SDRAM DIMMs (used in desktop computers) or special laptop DIMMs?

i think you could just ad the CD-Rom of your desktop (with XP cd in it) as a network drive on the laptop (connect laptop to your network ;) ), and install, should work just fine.

Thanks for the suggestion, Rally1. I've been mulling it over and the lack of a CD-ROM drive is really turning me off to this notebook. It is a GREAT deal for what it is...I just don't need a subnotebook for what I do.

I also did this with our computer upstairs and this setup works GREAT I must say. My sh***y drives crapped out on me, so I just networked the drive and use it like its on my computer!

Just ordered one called Compaq see if they could price match they said no hell difference.

Well, I have the Sony I. link drive from the staples deal so I don't really need the CD ROM drive I prefer the light weight over a CD ROM any time.

It said something about 2 is that the years warranty?

you will need a PCMcia firewire card then, to connect your i.link CDRW to the laptop.

Does the thing even have PCMCIA slots? I didn't see them listed in either the overview or the tech specs. Hard to imagine none, though.

I think this is a smoking deal if you have the Sony I.Link drive you can always copy the win XP CD to hard drive and install XP.

And I don't think the PCMCIA firewire card is that expensive.

and someone please tell me how many years warranty it comes with?

1 or 3 years from Compaq?

check this out also.

What the hell pcmall has 3 version's of this laptop, refurb, brand new, and another brand new which says call for Stock.

I am guessing one is win98 and one is win200.

And I am kinda suprised that the refurb is more expensive and the retail brand new is 100% cheaper.

This doesn't look right!!!!!!!

Who bought this laptop??

A laptop without a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM is like a CUP without Water.
(ewww bad analogy but you get the point).

bump for a great deal on a small notebook. Only downside is no floppy or CD drive. Oh well, get a firewire card cheap at tigerdirect and connect a firewire CD drive. This thing is only a little over 3 lbs.
