just to let you know i got on this deal last time and i got stuck with a crappy generic "DVS1600H" brand dvd.. not the greatest at all, including the latest firmware. it is terribly picky with cd's and and the smallest finger print will slow down the DAE and basic file copy. =( I'm going to office max today and try and exchange my online order... )

EDIT: Okay, I meant DSR-1600H by DVS Korea, and it is NOT a rebadged sony. It was crap. Just got back from OM and exchanged the drive with no problems, got a lite-on. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO DRIVES IS NIGHT AND DAY. Just ran Nero CD Speed and did a bunch of CD-copies... FLAWLESS. This is my first lite-on drive and it smokes. It has read all my trashed up CDs that could only be read by my old 8x Toshiba (ah bless her soul!)...! WOW!

Is there a mfg number or something else on the outside of the box that will reveal if a Lite-on mfg dvd drive is inside?

Still waiting on IVista to pay a similar rebate offer from Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving).

Also, OfficeMax coupons are for new customers only.

This sounds like a pretty slick deal.

I just might do this as long as I know forsure I am getting a Lite-On and not some other brand
Are there any distinguishable markings for the Lite-On?

Don't need the PC Cam but if it's free (after rebate) then it might be ok

The iVista see me now software is now on OfficeMax's web site , along with the other two items in this deal, but the rebate period doesn't start until Sunday 3-10.

to know if you got a lite-on or not:

YMMV - this is my generalization between the outside on my lite-on and that piece of crap DVS
1. Serial No. is all numbers, if it's got letters it is NOT a lite-on
2. PowerDVD logo, if it's got WinDVD it is NOT a lite-on

as for the lite-on it IS a 16x48, the box label is just the 'minimum' features the drive has

If you don't recieve the DVD-ROM mfg drive that you prefer, you can always return it to a officeMax store near you like RONType1 did. OfficeMax has a very liberal return policy, so that should be a problem.

there is also a Free AR: Jellybean Plum Caller ID (20081206) or Trim Style Phone (20081233) $10 in case u have too many paper clips :)
for some reason, i can not use my ebates like i used to be. Some heres what i did:
1. open ebates and go to officemax (its already login)
2. open coupon link and add items in a new browser.
3. back to the browser with ebates header and officemax content. Click on cart and see all these items. Continue to finish the deal.
4. Close both windows.
hope it help.

iVISTA apparently will do anything they can to NOT honor rebates. Consider this your fair warning.

I bought an IBM pc-cam/ivista-software bundle at best buy in november that was
supposed to be free after rebate, but I'm getting the idea that it was just a
way to get rid of crappy hardware/software and scam people out of $40.
The "rebate" form said you had to submit a completed "registration card", which
wasn't in the package. When I went back to BestBuy to return the product
missing the registration card, they said I had to install the software and
register online (and print out the result). I followed their instructions and
was brought to an Error #404 (page not found). After a couple calls back to
best buy, and re-trying the website for a few days , the Error #404 was updated to say that the
registration was no longer a requirement of the rebate. I printed that out,
and submitted it with the rebate form, and now they say they are rejecting my
rebate because I didn't register!
anyway.. this is as much a warning-to-others as anything else... but has
anyone had similar (or not similar) experience with ivista?
