win2000server, asusk7v, p2/350, 320mb
primary ide: (master) 20g hdd, (slave) ide zip100
secondary ide: (master) e-ide 32x-aku, (slave) mitsumi cr4801te cdr
having some cdrom issues - need some feedback..
so i am running nero/cdr on win2kserv - probably not ideal, but the box is a misc upgrade machine. neglected to swap out the cdr, but before you say "upgrade nero," read thru..
running nero 5038 and attempted backup burn of dungeonseige, using the 32x for reading, dump to hdd, no on-the-fly, etc. 32x read says "invalid track info" and mistumi says "read cd failed, unrecoverable read error at 00:12:59" [the matter of this disc can wait - it's the cdrom issue on my mind right now].
still, brand new cdrom. hmmm. try a confirmed data cdrom next. the mitsumi sees it, but surprisingly the 32x cannot. again, "invalid track info." somehow my cdrom has been tweaked. i installed win2kserv via this same drive maybe 2 months previous and it had been ripping np with eac just days before..
so try hitting the data cd via explorer. mitsumi drive sees it, 32x cannot. cdrom spins up, system hangs, cdrom light solid 5 seconds, out, and then repeats. hmmm. let's reboot.
the box boot sequence is CDROM, A, C. after post, same spinup, lights issue when it looks at the disc for potential boot. wait through this and it boots to windows via hdd. eject disc and it boots to windows immediately.
curious but unrelated i am thinking: previous evening i had been trying to get some 80min discs to work on the mitsumi. it had worked on a previous (unknown) brand but consistent write errors on these imations (if i recall brand on new ones). did the overwrite option to 80min in nero, enabled and disabled the autorun regkey to no avail. did not try 32x in here so don't know, but..
returning to screwy 32x behavior. drives look okay in devicemanager. secondary ide channel ok. pio on both. put "dma if available" on 0. pio the only option on 1. [do 0 and 1 refer to position-on-cable or master-slave status? which is which?] anyway, reboot and same behavior.
bios still correctly identifying all the drives on post. drag out case and swap drives on secondary ide channel. now mitsumi master and 32x slave. reboot. same behavior on 32x. ack.
pull out 32x and install as solo master, secondary ide channel to a sickly p166 with mondo ram running stripped down win2k. it will not read my same data cd! [i used other confirmed data discs as well.]
so unless my logic is flawed, i am thinking my 32x drive died. maybe laser or read-head or something i can't really get to. sound reasonable? any thoughts as to reasons why - and would playing with nero do that? should i swap cables? there is not much left i can think of. the "you can hurt your drive etc" warning in nero for overburn would only apply to the burner, and the mitsumi is still going..
off to newegg for preliminary dvd drive shopping. been putting that off. guess this is motivation. any advice would be great..
