I just came back from a vacation to find my computer crashing and quickly found that the fan on my PC's 9700PRO is dead. Any suggestions on how to replace it? (I have the case open with a fan blowing in for now).

Update: See post below. Not getting anything on the monitor anymore. BTW, the card does still get warm.

Upgrade? Hmmm. I do most of my currently quite limited gaming on the 360, so I'm not really interested in an upgrade until Vista is released. Any suggestions on a particular HSF unit?

AC Silencers can be pretty cheap and work for your setup (older revisions specifically)

if you dont care about price, and would like to use your new HSF in the future look towards a VF700/VF900 By Zalmann

if your a cheap cheap person... get something like the Evercool or Vantec Iceberg coolers

Thanks I ordered one of those from NewEgg (the fancy silent one) along with a CPU fan for one of our other PCs (the fan has been making some ugly noises lately) and some Arctic Silver. Thanks fellas!

some 3-1 oil in the fan motor will usally get one spinning again. This worked on an old ti4200 i had and my nf7-s chipset fan.

Oooh, good idea, I'll put some Triflow in there to see if it will get going again. Still, I'm glad a replacement is on the way.

Dang it I'm having trouble removing the original HS. The instructions for the new HSF suggest a hair dryer to heat the thermal pad that is probably in place in order to release it but I don't have a hair dryer.

or you can let the card heat up with the comp while it's booted up. Then right away you got a good chance to remove the thermal pad while the card is "warm"

Grr, so I tried Powermoloch's suggestion but was unable to get the HS off. I let the PC run until the HS was far too hot to handle with bare fingers, leaving the computer at the boot menu so I could instantly shutdown, disconnected the monitor, shutdown with the powerswitch, pulled out the card, twist, pulled, etc and the HS didn't budge. Any other ideas?

I let the card run much longer to get really hot, finally allowing me to rip that thing off. It took forever to clean the bleeping residue from the thermal pad, but I got the new HSF fan on with a fresh coat of Arctic Silver. Everything back into the case, boots fine to the boot menu I check that the new fan is running and... suddendly no display! Did I somehow kill my card??? Help!

I think the card is toast so I got an X1300 Pro or whatever it's called at CC. I did the "order online, pick-up in store" deal. I had a horrible time getting there in time because of subway line shutdown (rain related, I think) and guess what? The 'tards gave me the PCI Express version instead of the AGP version and I didn't notice until I got home (yes, I ordered the right one). WTF?? A simple problem is turning into quite the ordeal, eh? :D
