Dead card, how does it behave ?

I have a 4850 which i've been trying to repurpose, however the _brand new_ system i am putting it in does not recognise the card at ALL.. i mean, it might as well just be air sitting in the pci express slot .. card's fans are running and all, but no nothing other than that.

So all of you who have delt with defective cards before, how does it manifest? Like my description or what ? ty!
 
It depends on the card. Sometimes you get artifacts. Sometimes it won't post. Sometimes you get random driver crashes and BSODs.

This is my basic fear! Atleast its new, and thus under warranty .. but who needs the hazzle.
