I was just checking this out--
Does anyone know if Brother ships with half-full toner cartridges like some of the other guys? I see that the new Black cartridge is rated for 2200 pages, and the new color cartridges for 1400 pages. I'm not sure how they measure that with color. Is it 5% coverage for each color, or 5% total? Anyway, I was afraid it could get very expensive, very quickly! I noticed in a Newegg review for a different Brother printer, the HL-4070CDW someone stated that the toner life for that printer was based upon page count. If that is true, then that would be a dirty trick. Here's a quote:
Cons: This printer is set up to help Brother make money on toner. It stops printing after the page count for your cartridge is reached. And all three color cartridges expire at the same time. I called Brother and they told me that even with B&W some color toner is used. I open one "empty" cartridge and it still had 50% of it's toner.
I also noticed that the HL-3040CN model is a GDI printer and doesn't have the PCL6 and Postscript 3 emulation (BR-Script3) that it's bigger brother HL-3070CW has. That otherwise nearly identical model (also has 64MB memory vs. 32MB) is $320 plus shipping at Newegg, but only $229 at Amazon. The Amazon page says there is normally has a shipping charge on this, but not today for some reason.
