With W11/defender is this something still really needed?

Not me but others may think so, for them or someone else. Mac/iOS/Android devices supported. As far as paid and supported major-name AV/Security products go, this is a pretty good deal, works out to $17 per year for 10 devices.

That's a great deal for a reputable antivirus company. I however have only run Microsoft Defender on Windows 10 since the day it came out and have never gotten a single infection. Luck or just a good antivirus?

Not a deal at all for unnecessary software. Even the free version is overpriced.

I quit using it when it decided my Canon network printer was a maliciuous site. Took me two days to figure out that Bitdefender was the reason I couldn't print!
Prior to that, I couldn't log into my bank account, Bitdefender had decided it was a malicious site as well. Did it tell me that? No, the login would just fail over and over until the accoount was locked. The banks support was aware of the issue, that's how I finally figured out that one.
This happened on other sites too.

No refunds either.

I think user savvy and online vigilance plays the greatest role. e.g. knowing what a phishing attempt looks like, being able to identify and navigate those fake 'download' boxes that are actually sponsored ads that can appear even on legitimate websites such as when downloading Rufus USB Tool, among numerous others.

Get what works for you.

You are saying Win 11 or even Win 10 and Defender are good enough Um. Hellooo. Its Microsoft. They patch it all the time. As long as people are clicking and downloading stuff they shouldn't. Run something better than Defender.
