ugh... has ANYONE flashed one w/ the model number of VBT321240A to a Lite on? is it a lite on?? someone mentioned it wasn't. The front bezel is identical to my 24x liteon.. right down to the font of the text.
Yes, the Verbatim is a LiteOn, as long as the serial # is 12 digits.

I flashed my Verbatim with mtkflash version 1.48. If you're going to use the LiteOn firmware version XS0U.BIN, just remember that the "0" in that filename is a ZERO, not the letter O. I was going nuts for a couple of hours until someone on another forum pointed that out. It flashed perfectly after that.

Download this ZIP....it is from my server, but, if you don't trust me :( then you'll have to wait, because Lite-On is "maintaining their website"
^^this file contains MTKFLASH, XS0U.BIN and a copy of the below instructions

1) Boot to DOS with a Win98 boot disk, using Shift+F5 to boot directly to a command prompt (i.e. do NOT load CD drivers) --(Boot disks can be found by doing a search at google.com for "DOS boot disks" --5th link was good)
2) Download the MTKFLASH prog and the Liteon firmware and put them on a separate floppy
3) Boot into DOS, switch floppies, and backup your current firmware by the following command:
MTKFLASH X R /B /M filename.bin (where X is either 1 = Primary Master, 2 = Primary Slave, 3 = Sec Master, 4 = Sec Slave)--this is the IDE channel the CDRW is on
4) Turn that Verbatim into a Liteon by the next command:
MTKFLASH X W /B XS0U.bin (where X = see above, and the XS0 is a zero)

thanks for the heads up Linh. i just called staples and they told me the same thing. the rep told me that they've recv quite a few calls and that a memo was sent to the rebate office. she told me to send a copy of my print out showing the date i ordered and also a note specifying what was wrong. hopefully this gets taken care of with little or no bloodshed ;)

MKTFLASH just gets hung up lighting up the CDRW light. Maybe Liteon switched something on the April drives.

DanFungus,

Thanks for the great instructions and the all-in-one download! It went exactly as you described. Only thing not like you described was MKTFLASH should have been MTKFLASH.

Thanks!

Fill

p.s. Lnguyen - the reason it took 8 turns is it had 8 banks (BTW lite-on DVD drives only have 1 - found out as I flashed the wrong drive!)

I wanted to thank MysticMan1 again - Lite ON! I have a tech Qs w/ the install, newbie here didn't know where i should post: In CD Speed whenever I run ?Drive check? on my newly installed Lite-On LTR-32121S (32x12x40) with firmware version XSOR it shows Maximum read speed: 2112 KB/sec (12X). WHY ? shouldn?t it show 40X? Also all settings below that say yes except: R-W packed:no, Speed settings:4-8-12X.
I am running upgraded Nero 5.5.8.2 (as well as older older Easy CD version) in a Dell Win98 P3 system (will be upgrading to XP) that has my hard drive at the Primary Eide connector (CSEL ? master), a zip drive at Primary (CSEL ? slave), and a NEC 5700A DVD drive at the Secondary Eide (CSEL ? master) and the Lite-on Secondary (CSEL-slave). The Lite-ON replaced a slower Sony CDRW drive that worked fine in this configuration.
I opened Nero DriveSpeed and don?t know what it does or if I set (messed) anything up when I opened it. What does DriveSpeed basically do and if I did mess w/ the settings is there a way to reset it?
When I run the Transfer Rate Test everything seems to check out fine (what does the DAE digital audio extraction Test really tell you?).
Lastly, I like to do my copies on the fly (source NEC DVD rated 17x-40x CD, DAE speed 10x-24x) and get the following warning from Nero when trying to copy on the fly:
"It looks like both your source & destination drive for ?on the fly? copy process are conncted to the same Ide bus. We would strongly recommend to connect your source & destination drive to different Ide busses. Technical background: An IDE bus cannot handle interleaved read & write commands. This will reduce the data transfer rate during ?on the fly? copies and may therefore cause a buffer underun error."
It then gives me the choice to Cancel or Burn Anyway ? My DELL system came configured this way w/ the Lite-On replacing the slower OEM Sony burner and everything worked fine that way. Also when I click Burn Anyway every ?on the fly? burn seems to go fine (all test burns to date).
????? THANKS

If it has a
W at the end (3212405W) it's the newer mfg drive. You can read about it here : LINK

I got the Verbatim flashed to the Liteon S model, by disconnecting the cable select slave HD and flashing to 4 slave, although the CDRW is CS master. 5W flashes burned coasters, with burn seek errors.

Which barcode is the UPC on the box? Is it the Serial Number thats on the white sticker? The Part number, or the barcode thats next to the part number?

Heifetz

Btw, got an Aopen. For those of you guys that got this, its really a great drive. You get Justlink, very fast write and read, and also a huge 8meg buffer. Great deal!

Thanks Misticman for the number.
It's getting little more weirder.

I got a response for my mail.

Thank you for your inquiry regarding your rebate. We have received your submission, but we are unable to honor your rebate because it was not postmarked by the date designated in the guidelines of the promotion.

Guideline postmark:06/25/02
Customer's postmark:05/13/02
Deptt./Promotion:02-47658

It's impossible, since I sent the rebate mail out on 23rd, and I am pretty sure there was no $50 rebate for this drive around 5/13/02.
It's really hard to know what's going on over there.

Me and my friend both got ours today, both from PA, both verbatims. Manu. date March 2002, it's the S version of the drive (opened the drive up and checked). Odd thing is that this drive is MUCH heavier than my $40 16x10x40 liteon from OMax a few months ago. I might flash the drive soon, although one question: would the 16x liteon copy of nero work for this drive after the flash?

Thanks for the AWESOME deal!

But one thing, I got my drive today, its a verbatim, after installing that and nero I downloaded the latest copy of cdrwin, and when I try to do a burn it states " No CDROM recording devices were found on your system." I have checked it out in nero, and nero finds my cdrw fine, as well as windows..any ideas?

cdrwin and many other programs don't recognize the verbatim.

Either use other software, wait for the software to update or flash it to a liteon (see instructions somewhere in this thread).

Excellent. Got a Lite-On. Finally dumped that old 2x burner that was sitting in my Linux box. Zippy.

Would anyone who has been receiving a 32125W drive let us know what the outside sticker indicated the drive model was and also the serial number (drop the last couple digits if you want for security). It might help those of us who just got drives being able to swap with a new drive from either Staples or OfficeMax.

I've yet to see one confirmation that ANYONE got the W drive. I'd say slim chance there is anyone who did.
