DEAD! - AOpen 16X Dual layer DVD Burner, $45. AR at newegg:

How are these burners? I'm tempted as I still haven't jumped on the bandwagon and bought one.
I'm mainly needing to burn for extra storage, so I know it'd be fine for that, but obviously it won't be long til I'm getting more into heavy use with it.

If I hadn't already bought a Plextor 712 at the end of October, I might be all over this. It's pretty new to have many reviews, but run a google on it anyway - AOpen "DUW1608/ARR" review - and variants. The one review I found didn't give very high marks. But firmware updates might fix at least some of the problems. In any case, it is hard to tell from the review whether the reviewer used recommended media or just whatever he had on hand. At least initially (early firmware revs) one wants to go by the recommended media lists.

p.s. There is a very new firmware update for this drive. (12/20/04). So any drive bought now probably won't have this rev. Need to update right away.

Have to crank up the time machine... 😉 I'm sure they meant 1/10/2005 but still you have to be quick like a bunny and get the stuff out the door - but still not so fast as to make any necessary copies for your records.

Do you mind deleting the "-" from title thread? It's not -$45 it's $45.

If you think that's ridiculous, those $50 and $20 rebates for rebadged Benq & AOPEN burners from a few months back did come through... 🙂 People got back more $ than they paid for...

I bought the OEM version about 4 weeks ago from Newegg for a work buddy. It was $61 shipped. He hasn't had any trouble with it except for a 2x TDK DVD-R disc that failed early in the burn. I gave him a 25 pack of Ritek G04's and he's a burnin' Mo-Fo.

After I installed it, I was poking around on the forums at the AOpen site and this burner was taking some pretty big lumps there. This may be part of the reasom for the low price. I think AOpen wants these cleared out. There were comments on the forum about AOpen not even releasing this model in overseas because it had issues but I don't know it as fact.

But like I said before, I had no problems myself with this model. Maybe the new firmware will fix some of the issues the people at the forum were having.
