Feeling pretty good about snagging that True Power Classic 750W for $50AR awhile back. :awe:

Hmm, I missed that. This EDGE is a more expensive PSU, According to the [H]OCP review of the EDGE, though, both platforms are similar. The biggest difference is the "bling" - the LED fan of the EDGE, and the Modular connectors.

So I would say that you got the better deal.

It was about 6 months ago, Larry.

But keep an eye out. That particular line is where the deals are, probably due to their non-modularity.

Educate me. What is with this "Bronze 80" and "Gold" ratings? Is it like Bronze is likely to explode and take out your whole PC while Platinum is more regulated and stable or something?

It's just an efficiency rating, but the rule of thumb is the better the efficiency rating, the less power it will use, and, it's implied, the better the build quality.

Personally, I just stick to 2 OEMs regardless of their 80Plus rating: Seasonic and Delta.

Btw, did I over-buy? I'm running a G3258 @ 4.0Ghz, 1.200V (50-53W shown in CoreTemp), 7950 3GB HIS brand, and under full distributed-computing load, my rig takes under 300W at the wall, including my Energy Star-rated LCD monitor.

I was thinking, what if I get a Skylake quad-core rig, and OC, and then move both of my 7950 cards into one box, and do DC this winter season.

But that's probably not going to exceed 500W at the wall.

OTOH, if I do put both 7950s in one box, with an OCed SKL quad, then I would have to replace my battery back-up unit (UPS). It's a CyberPower 550VA / 330W unit, and is precariously close to its limit with only one 7950 and only an OCed dual-core (G3258).

Hmm. Maybe these PSUs were more of an impulse buy than anything else, thinking of possible SKL builds in the future.

Edit: My idle wattage, in Windows 7 64-bit, according to my UPS sofware, is around 100W at the wall, including LCD monitor.
(102-105W) (Edit: My bad, that's with one core doing DC. Just web browsing / idle, it's actually closer to 78W at the wall, including monitor.)

If I were to install one of these nice Seasonic 750W PSUs, with that low of a power draw, what kind of efficiency am I looking at? 70%?

Also in general more efficiency = less waste heat = hopefully lower noise to cool.
