I'm guessing I have to pay att for lte service right?

Well you do, if you want to use it. But if you're asking if there's any obligation to add a data plan to it, no, there's not. You can use it as a regular wifi tablet.

It does say "previous generation".....

These are third generation. However, their doesn't seem to be a successor to this 7" version in the 4th generation. The 4th generation 7" is a replacement for the previous generation 6" and has much lower specs than the 3rd generation 7" HDX. So if you want the best performing 7" Kindle Fire, this is still it.

The "new generation" Kindle HDX is the 8.9" one running on S805 ($389, WiFi). I do not think the 7" HDX will be refreshed any time soon seeing that there is a new 7" Kindle HD (not HDX) running on a weaker SOC for lower prices.

There are (were) two Kindles at 7" screen, HD and HDX, but only the 7" HD model got refreshed. The 7" HDX model is updated to the 8.9" HDX model. So the ones on sale are as current as 7" Kindle HDX go, despite being "previous generation."

No matter, anyway. It looks like the deal is dead.

Not sure whether you can get the 4G LTE versions anymore; they are not showing up. I was able to snag a 64 GB HDX 4G LTE at $159 on 12/08. I confirmed with AMZN, no obligation to add wireless services....
