Model AOA110-1626 @ Newegg

I got this exact model as a gift back in November when it was still $350! They must be clearing them out to make way for the upcoming 10.1" Aspire One.

The RAM is upgradeable to a max of 1.5GB but it requires nearly totally disassembling the netbook. Not terribly difficult to do if you have experience building PCs however.

Here are some quick points in no particular order.

Pros:
1) Nice keyboard, 89% full size.
2) Excellent wi-fi reception.
3) Dual SD card slots (one for semi-permanent extra storage).
4) Good quality screen.

Cons:
1) Slow SSD is the systems main bottleneck.
2) Relatively low battery life with the 3-cell battery, ~2.5-2.75 hours.
3) Speakers face downwards on the underside of the palm rest, gets muffled when not on a flat surface.
4) The touchpad buttons are to the left & right of the pad, not below.

Edit: Deal is dead, now $300.

 In for one on 2/6/09. I looked everywhere, and I don't think you can't beat the price unless you go used or refurb.

lol how low can they go? I can't imagine a $240 is very profitable 😀

got one of these in november to replace a eee pc surf, and the thing died on me within 2 days. got in on the deal for black friday, and newegg thankfully refunded my money instead of replacing it. bought myself a refurb dell mini 9 instead, and much prefer it to the acer one. and a thumbs down to acer for making it so difficult to upgrade the ram. how hard could it have been to make a door to upgrade it, instead of making people take the thing apart.

If it says it's SSD, does that mean it has a SATA SSD drive or is it mounted to the motherboard?
It isn't mounted to the mobo but it isn't SATA either. It uses a ZIF connector. I've heard of people replacing the SSD with a HDD but I don't know the details, just that it's possible.

Actually I think the SSD in the AAO (and many other netbooks) plugs into a mini PCI-E slot. A handful of companies (Patriot, Runcore, etc.) sell larger mini PCI-E drives you can can install in these machines.

Awesome price on this, though. I have a Mini 9 (which I would highly recommend if you can find a good price on one), but have used a friend's AAO before. Seemed like a pretty nice little system, if I needed a netbook I wouldn't hesitate at this price. 🙂

Wow, that's a spankin' deal on a netbook. Remember when the miniscule 7" Eee PC cost more than that?
