Well, yes. The infamous bad sector problem has now spurred up on my HDD (30GB IBM 75GXP), along with it's evil cat scratching noises. It's not toooooo bad right now, but I'm sure it will get worse.
When I run DFT I find it, gives me error code 0x70 (defective device) and suggests either erase disk or....something else I don't remember (return to main menu, return product, I dunno..something with "return" in it).
Thank God I have everything backed up, as of yesterday.
Anyway, I assume the erase disk will be a LL format, fine. Will that really fix anything? Does that take care of bad sectors? I mean, it ain't all that hot in my case. (3 fans, case is open, cool ambient air temp, good flow).
Anyway it also gave me a TRC code for the RMA. Which I assume suggests I should RMA the bastard.
1. Should I try the LL format or skip it 'cause it won't do squat.
2. IBM doesn't require data on the drive when I ship it back to them do they? I have stuff I don't want them having a peek at. (Stuff other than norp, thank you very much ;-P )
3. What do you think they'll ship back to me? a 40GB 60GXP? I might go out and grab another one from newegg, the price is just so damn good. But now after reading so many posts and my own experience, I'm not sure I should. (Damn I wish IBM would just send me a check instead) But then again, I figure they're very popular drives. So many ppl have problems 'cause there's so many out there. Really, we're only going to see posts from people with problems anyway. Nobody ever says "My HDD is working just fine, just to let you know" <-- Yes I got this idea from the post on storagereview.com.
Any suggestions?
