I ended up pulling the trigger on the 1700X I linked to above for $229.50.

My son has outgrown his Haswell i5 system since he started engineering classes, and he does a lot of content creation. Hopefully this thing will be fast enough, and have enough cores to last him through college. I think it's a lot of processor for the price.
