DDS-1 Backup drive and DDS-2 media

I picked up a DDS-1 tape drive from a garage sale for a few bucks. It looks like it works and all, its SCSI interface, and it shows up and registers and everything with all my other SCSI devices on bootup. WinXP also recognizes it. But being a DDS-1 format drive, it's a pretty old drive. I've only been able to find DDS-2 media. When I insert the tape, the drive will accept it, and attempt to read it, the green access light on it will blink for 5 seconds or so. But then after that, it will just spit it back out. Common sense would lead me to think that the drive will not accept the tape because the tape is not DDS-1, am I correct in assuming this? And if so, is there any way to format the DDS-2 tape to DDS-1?

Thanks.

Too bad I can't pack up and send the 100s of them sitting in a box at work that will never be used again, but I did a search online and found many sites such as this one. From my experience, you can use a DDS-1 tape in a DDS-2+ drive but not a DDS-2+ tape in an earlier drive. Later media is longer, denser and thinner in many cases, so I doubt you can manipulate the media to make it acceptible in the drive.

Umm, what I was trying to get at was whether or not I can use the DDS-2 tapes I have now with the DDS-1 drive...
Like as opposed to buying DDS-1 tapes. 🙂
And whether that is indeed the problem I am experiencing, as opposed to the drive itself not working or something.

If it just kicks them out after reading them I'd say no. I just tried this with a DDS-3 tape in a DDS-2 drive.

Great... Now I got a few DDS-2 tapes just sitting around then. 😛
Ideas on the max capacity that I can find on a DDS-1 tape out there?
