DDR5 base frequency to be 4800MHz

Looks like DDR4 will have a short lifespan indeed, according to PC Gamer:

JEDEC also previously indicated that DDR5's base frequency will be in the neighborhood of 4800MHz (DDR5-4800). That's a tick higher than recently announced DDR4-4600 memory kits from Corsair and G.Skill.

That's a really nice jump in clock speed if true. Does anyone know what DDR4's official maximum clock speed is supposed to be? Likely around 4 or 4.2ghz if I had to guess.

Bummer I was hoping that DDR4 would last as long as DDR3 did. Of course DDR5 may not be out for desktops anytime soon anyway, isn't meant for servers?

Low power devices will definitely make use of it, and so can high power workstations and gaming rigs that love high bandwidth and low latency. At speeds approaching 5ghz, the effective latency of the RAM would be much lower than what you see today.

Yeah but I doubt the AMD and Intel are willing to change sockets at this time. maybe in three or four years?

Just when DDR4 is returns to mid-2016 pricing, the DDR5 you have (?) to buy for the latest processors will cost like today's memory.

The highest defined speed for DDR4 is 3200mhz (this is what the articles "3.2 gigabits per second" is referring to for DDR4). The highest in actual mass production is only 2666mhz and wasn't available until somewhat recently (notice Coffeelake's 2666mhz support).

Why would they change sockets? The socket has nothing to do with the type of RAM. Memory type would affect the motherboard DIMM slots and the integrated memory controller.

That's what I thought initially, but I just couldn't believe that DDR4's official top speed would only top out at 3200MT/s. That's pitifully slow to be honest and not much faster than what DDR3 was capable of.

The DDR4 standard was finalized in 2012 and only started to be used in 2015. So we likely have around three years before DDR5 is actually available.

You think DDR4 compatibility at rated speeds were bad now, expect even worse with DDR5.

DDR3's highest JEDEC speed was 2133MT/s. Anything over that was an overclock, usually with binned and/or overvolted chips. Hitting those high transfer rates while still operating within the stringent JEDEC standards is much harder than if you just throw the specs out the window. I'm pretty sure that JEDEC DDR4 3200 memory is still completely unavailable, even though I bought a factory-overclocked kit with the same speed two years ago when skylake was released.

DDR->DDR2->DDR3 I believe had 2x jumps in terms of max defined speed and min defined speed was always higher than the previous max defined speed. DDR4's min defined speed was only the same as DDR3s max, and max to max was only 50% higher by comparison.
