Question DDR4 3200 memory

ahi all, i recently built a desktop after not building one for 10+ years and am confused about memory.
everything is up and running but my memory is running at 1066mhz. I'm confused what it is supposed to be running at?

I have g.skill brand that is specced as follows.

  • DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600)
  • Timing 16-18-18-38
  • CAS Latency 16
  • Voltage 1.35V

But when it autos it runs at 1066mhz. When I manually set it to ddr4 3200 profile in asrock mobo it runs as follows.

When I manually put in everything as specced, the computer won't boot at all. cas, timing, voltage. not sure what they are supposed to be running at, nothing is overclocked. Thanks for any guidance.

It would be helpful if you listed your full system specs.

This might just be a case of your CPUs memory controller not being able to run 64GB of memory at those clocks/timings.

When CPU-Z says 1600MHz that means it's actually running at 3200, so when it said 1066 that's actually 2133 which is the default of your memory.

Yeah my screenshot is after i set it to 3200, 1066mhz was when it first posted. Let me know what else is needed.

I have an x570 steel legend, I needed to set the timings in the bios/xmp thing. My memory’s default was ddr2400
32GB ballistic 16-16-18 ddr3200
Once set it ran fine.

Well, at least you've got it running at 3200 albeit with pretty terrible timings. If you want to improve the timings I recommend giving Ryzen DRAM calculator a go.

Or if there isn't any particular reason you need 64GB of RAM, perhaps settle for 32?

In my humble opinion, there are probably two items that are "messing" with your RAM setup.

First, reduce the command rate (CR) to 2T instead of 1T. That may be all you need.

But, second, AMD's memory controller has always had a bit of trouble with running four sticks of memory at their "fast" XMP ratings....was that way back in the socket 754/939 days......seems to be the same today. Four sticks seem to rarely run at the "fast" specs the memory is rated for as compared to two sticks. The IMC maybe still is having difficulties after all these years.

Intel, while a bit better, can have the same problem, btw. Seems to be just a little better at being able to handle four sticks at XMP ratings vs. AMD.....at least on consumer boards. Just my opinion but it's what I've seen over the past decades from AMD.

I have 4x16GB@3600MHZ running 100% stable on my x570 based AMD system. The RAM is actually rated for 3200 but the micron-e die memory seems to play well with AMD.

I was expecting issues with filling all 4 banks and was pleasantly surprised that there were no issues at all.
Perhaps AMD got it right with X570/Ryzen 3000 or I just got lucky?

Good news, I have two more sticks of e die coming for Xmas. I’ll have the same setup as you.
I think it’s AMD and AMD selling more. Micron memory is now labeled as “optimized for Ryzen”. Micron probably figured it is safe to spend some extra engineering time.

When you say you're setting it to the 3200 profile, are you using the DOCP profile for your specific sticks, or is it just a generic 3200 profile stored on the MB? If it's the latter, the loose timings might just be a compatibility thing and you'll need to use DOCP or adjust manually.

I haven't tried 2 sticks but I paid for 4 sticks and I definitely want to run all silly, seems silly to box 2 sticks. I set it in the mobo OC Tweaker menu and DRAM frequency. There is a profile for 3200 ram and the default timings are correct but it will not boot, same as if I set it manually.

Gotta ask....did you check G Skill's QVL for the memory? Your motherboard is NOT listed as qualified per G Skill's QVL for that specific memory. Should it matter? Maybe not, but possibly it is part of your issue....

Ah, I see that now.

Given that he's on x570, he should just run Ryzen Timing Calculator, and try loosening timings or reducing clocks until it will boot. No way that kit needs to run @ CAS/CL 22. Either that or return the RAM and get some Micron e-die for cheap.
