DDR333/DDR400 Ram problem

Hey guys - heres the problem, any advice would be great!

I have Abit KX7-333R mobo with 1 x 512mb DDR333 vdata RAM (I'll call this STICK1) . I haven't OC'ed it - it was all running sweet - until I added a second vdata 512mb stick (this one DDR400)(I'll call this STICK2.

The machine booted into XP, but Farcry crashed with "Critical Exception" as soon as I ran it (which had been working without issue).

Rebooted and this time it loaded the game, but crashed with similar Critical Exception after 5 minutes of playing.

Used Memtest 86 bootable cd and it found about 8 errors (during test5). (With STICK1 + STICK2 in Slot1&2)

I then removed the STICK2 and tried Memtesting only STICK1. Passed all tests.

Then I removed STICK1 and put in STICK2 only - Passed Memtests.

I've since tried every combination of CMOS ram settings and STICKs in different Slots etc.... still reporting errors in Memtest86 under every combination of the two sticks i try... when i change combinations of CMOS settings and retry memtest, the number of errors found changes also.

I haven't flashed the latest BIOS just yet. That was going to be my next plan of attack.

Ok well I finally found a combination of the two sticks which passed all Memtests... DDR400 in Slot1 and DDR333 in Slot2.

HOWEVER, after booting into XP programs soon started crashing and when i started loading Farcry it rebooted the machine! The machine runs perfectly on either of the two sticks - just not both!

This is very frustrating.

Anyone had experiance similar to this? Or know of issues when using two different DDR-rated sticks? I had heard that mobo would simply limit the 400 down to my mobos max - which is 333.

Seems strange that those heavy duty Memtests would finally pass, and yet programs under XP would freak out after only a couple of minutes of running.

Sorry for the long post, but I'd really appreciate any help with this problem!

Thanks.

It happens, sometimes 2 sticks just dont want to play nice together.

Have you tried relaxing the timing on the ram? EG from cas2.5 to cas3 ...

Didn't appear to have the option to relax timing past 2.5?

Anyways I've just taken back my new DDR400 stick and got 2 identical sticks of DDR400.

It works.

Thank god!
