I was thinking about geting either Kingmax pc3200
or some Corsair pc2700
the mem is gonna go in an asus a7v333

Any issues with running the Kingmax at CL2 ???
which do you all consider to be generally higher quality mem ??
what differences can i expect ?

I would get the Corsair myself. Crucial and Mushkin are both at $89 for 256 of PC2700.

samsung pc2700. i have both corsair xms and samsung. not only is the samsung cheaper and single sided, but it's TRUE pc2700 and not hand-picked, overclocked pc2100 like the corsair.

take the heatsinks off your sticks and tell me what ns they are. 6ns are *true* chips. they hand-pick their stuff. sticks that can only do pc2100 are sold as pc2100, sticks that can do pc2700 will be labeled as pc2700, etc.

from my experience: my samsung does 154mhz 2-5-2-2 at 2.5V, while my corsair needs 2.7V to be stable. same settings, same motherboard, same cpu, same power source, same everything.

also, my corsair gets *very* warm. the samsung is pretty cool.

and this is the CORSAIR MEMORY XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series 256MB PC3000 DDR RAM 333MHz - OEMCMX256A-3000C2 DDR, PC3000 32x64, Non-ECC, 184-Pin, CAS2 from newegg.

Sure enough, under the spreaders we find 7.5ns micron chips. That?s the same stuff as is used on PC2100 Crucial, except that Corsair cherry pick high performing batches. 1000/7.5 still = 133MHz however so I am already a little dubious of how well this RAM will perform.

Oh well, I always thought Corsair has 5ns in them as their 512mb XMS PC2700 could hit DDR400+ speeds.

Hey TuffGuy! How are things? Just dropped by to check on memory spills...

Looks like you finally decided to check underneath those heat spreaders of corsair and confirmed things. Thanks for confirming. You might want to let Thugs know about this as his corsair seem to max out on him now at DDR425 and he plans to get some faster dimms.

Peace.

I was thinking of getting some OCZ memory but was told bad things about them. Now this article says their PC2700 rev3 uses the samsung 6.0ns chip. So do you guys think it would be safe to buy then?
The reason I ask is that the only PC2700 that I see Samsung has on newegg is Cas2.5. The OCZ memory is Cas 2.0, which I was told is better......

Both my rigs are running at 152Mhz and 154MHz 2-5-2-2. I can push them higher, but backing off on the memory timings and upping the voltage isn't worth it. I need your advice though. I kept one of the BG7s, and I picked up a temporary P4B266. What should I pick up to replace the P4B266, since I need to take it back soon. I was thinking about picking up an i850E, but will it do 150MHz? (I'll be used to crunch Seti@Home.)

It's up to you. I'm not sure if people still have problems with OCZ now, but since both the OCZ and Samsung sticks use Samsung's 6ns chips, I'd get the Samsung just to be safe. You never know what you'll get with OCZ.

Thanks. I actually changed my mind and will get some Mushkin PC3000 instead.
It's only cas2.5 but it's 6ns at least.
A guy on the general hardware forum convinced me to get it because they have a 512 MB stick at newegg for only $153 with free shipping. :)
I was told elsewhere that Mushkin was as good as Samsung anyway....

TuffGuy, glad to hear that you finally got around stabilizing that board cuz it was a very interesting experience. As far as i850E/RDRAM systems, there aren't that many choices. The word out there is that Abit TH7II (with or without raid versions exist) is probably the best overclocker in its class especially if you get lucky and end up with the right DRCG on your board. Asus's P4T533-C based on the i850E is not bad in terms of stability but current interest seems to surround the new P4T533, a new kind of mobo that supports a new RDRAM standard with 32-bit RIMM sockets versus classic 16-bit RDRAM. Keep in mind RDRAM is much different than DDR. RDRAM gets its speed from the simultaneous dual channel acces of two RIMM sockets while DDR speed comes from dual pumping (Dual Data Rate) of each socket and interleaving if more than one banks are present. DDRII down the line will have support for dual channel in addition to DDR. Also the rumor is that Intel will move away from RDRAM according to their roadmap. As for an intel 1.6a hitting 2400 with 150 fsb that shouldn't be a problem as it's been driven on an abit th7ii with PC1066 RDRAM samsung mem chips (32ns) up to 2900 MHZ ie 175 FSB using vid pin mod and water cooling to get around undervolting and heat. I hope this guides you if you decide to check out the i850E route.

Peace.
