DDR3

My friend has accidentally purchased this RAM thinking that all motherboards support DDR3. Now she is ready to exchange it for my 8 GB DDR2 800?

Would it be wise to do it? I never played with DDR3 much, I have a MSI board that supports both DDR2 and DDR3.

8GB of DDR2-800 is worth roughly $150-200, whereas her RAM is selling on Newegg for over $300. You could pretty easily turn a profit just by selling hers and then buying whatever you want, if that's the kind of thing you want to do to a friend. She would be better off returning the RAM if she can and then buying DDR2.

Since your board only supports 4GB of your DDR2 anyway, you're not really losing anything by switching to DDR3, and you're gaining the potential to use 8GB of RAM. (And you're coming out way ahead monetarily.)

It's a bit of a rip-off for your friend, but it's a great deal for you.

I don't think she will return the RAM. She isn't the brightest we get except in AoE 3, she doesn't play any other game. I think I'll trade my ram 😛 - what she doesn't know wouldn't hurt.

Anyway I want to know if there are any performance gains for that DDR3?

Not really. On current Intel systems RAM speed doesn't mean much. A few percentage points at most. However, DDR3 is advantageous with your board because you have the ability to upgrade to 8GB, which you didn't have with DDR2.

Its really latency vs frequency, difference doesn't show until you get to DDR3 1600 or 1800 or even 2000.

Even at those speeds the gain is minimal. RAM speed just isn't a limiting factor right now.

Well, it's two times faster than DDR 800, it will probably be useful in future. I don't think it'll help me in oc as I have a unlocked cpu.

It will be useful when Nehalem rolls around, not so much for a Core2 system.

That is a nasty thing to do to your friend. she bought 350$ worth of ram, it has never been used, it is new in box. she could sell it for 90% of the price on ebay even if she could not return it.
And you want to "trade her" 160$ (or less) worth of used ram for it?

and personally, I would take 8GB of DDR2-800 over 4GB of DDR3-1600

I agree, thats not a very nice thing to do to a "friend." And more slow ram > less fast ram.

His board supports 8GB of DDR3 and only 4GB of DDR2, so the quantity vs. speed argument still plays out in favor of DDR3 in his situation.

mmm... if his 8GB are 2x4GB then he is giving away 200$... with the attitude of "what she doesn't know can't hurt her" I kinda doubt that is the case. The board specifies only 4GB of ram on DDR2, so maybe he has 2x2GB on the board and 2x2GB lying around somewhere and intends to trade both to her for her 4GB ram.

Either way, I would offer my friends a fair deal by pricing each item.
Ideally though, she should sell hers on ebay and buy DDR2... you should keep yours as is, and get 8GB of DDR3 in a year or so.

funny you will say that since I recently found out I needed a quad for certain games. And got the bunchmark evidence to support it.

8GB is not a waste in vista thanks to readyboost.
And it will be absolutely useful in about 1 year... and people who are not tech savvy do not upgrade their computers, so getting 8GB now ensures smooth operation in the future.

Future proofing is pointless, unless it is done for the a clueless end user.

lol you seem very concerned, but don't worry we've been doing this to each other since we were kids. Actually she wants me to have that RAM, she believed P4 was faster than Core 2 until last December and wouldn't understand greater truths about technology.

If she knows what the value of her RAM is & yours is & is okay with it, sure...(though personally i wouldn't drop down to 4 GB myself)

Otherwise that seems a bit sketchy to do to a friend.

I have 4 x 2 GB modules...they aren't used you chowder head, stop acting like you are born with manners and toilet trained.
