DDR3 what to buy?

well before i run out and buy some more ddr3.. what should i get? what is good price? i remember getting low voltage Samsung half height stuff last time i got some and never even overclocked it.

not even sure what cpu i will get but throwing a cheapish 1155 setup together.. picked up 50$ mobo off the forums and prob will get 40-50$ cpu g640? (40$ 2.9ghz dual core? ) .. Ram seems expensive tho. 8gb sets are 70+? should i just get 4gb? will be slight gaming / some music apps / spreadsheets is all.

guess a cpu recommendation be cool too.

You haven't even started at all and sound like you don't know what you want yet. You are better off checking out Anand's or pcper's articles on recommended budget rigs to get you started on parts.

Wait for the hot deals and sales. I'd say get 4 GB for cheap. Or, wait for a sale and spend no more than $50 for 8 GB. But your usage won't ever need more than 4 GB. Even enthusiast gaming is a challenge to need more than 4 GB, and you certainly don't seem to need more for virtual machines or other memory hogs.

In the overall scheme of things, memory is not expensive.
Get 8GB if you're planning on running a 64-bit OS, otherwise stick with 4GB.
If I were shopping for high quality memory, I would use the following parameters as a guide...

* DDR3 rated at 1.5v or lower
* DDR3 rated at the lowest CAS I could afford
* DDR3 rated at the highest clock speed I could afford
* Limit the scope of my purchease to G.Skill, Mushkin, Samsung, Corsair XMS or Crucial (non-Ballistix)

While not wavering on the voltage point, I would balance the other issues with my budget.

Remember, my goal is not pure "benchmarking" performance, but simply finding the highest quality memory I can afford. ^_^
The only reason I pay a premium for low latency, high speed, low voltage memory is...
Quality and quality alone.
1.5v is the JEDEC DDR3 voltage standard.
Stay with 1.5v or less if you can afford it..
