DDR3 RAM? Only 5 Percent Performance Increase?

So I just picked up an Athlon II 240 2.8GHZ AM3 processor and an AM2+ board. The board takes DDR2 not DDR3. I have read there is only at best a 5 percent performance difference between DDR2-800 or 1066 and DDR3-1333. Is this true?

I read a couple of benchmarks sites that I just punched up on Google and 5% seems to be accurate. Of course that's for gaming. DDR3 will be of more benefit in CPU and memory intensive activities. The mobo's chipset also factors in to all this.

It all depends on what you're doing with the system. I'd say if you're mainly gaming, stick with cheaper DDR2 for now. Of course it always helps to build your system to be futureproof.

Even with the Athlon IIs, increasing the NB/IMC speed should overcome the ""5%"" or so benefit --- 'generally' for each 10% increase in speed bandwidth will increase 3-4% and latency will fall 3-4% (or maybe a bit more)
