DDR3, DDR4, DDR5 something to think about

Hello,
Am new here. Been working on building my new PC. And here's something that got me thinking.

We know DDR3 Memory is godly overpriced when compared to the DDR2 for such little difference.

But when we shop for graphic cards, one get go to DDR5, but to me the price doesn't reflect your normal DDR pricing thats built into the card.

Anyone have thoughts or opinions on this?

Simple answer, GDDR is not DDR. They are organized different.

Mostly the differences are in the layout of the memory. On the simplest level, GDDR stacks more lower density chips together while DDR stacks higher density chips. The reason for this is cost. GDDR is placed very close to the GPU so the wider bus (x16 or x32 gddr5 compared to x4, x8 or x16 for ddr3) isn't as costly. In the case of motherboards because the memory is further away, they prefer a thinner (lower cost) bus and as such use higher density memory chips. (Higher Density is harder to manufacture and thus has a higher cost)

using a 512 Mb module as an example
GDDR5(32 bit data bus) will use 32 16M chips.
DDR3 (16 bit data bus) will use 16 32M chips.

If you want more info you can look at the Jedec specifications. I am sure there are a lot more differences than this but that is the functional reason for the price difference.
