DDR3 choice

I'm building a new one and want to use DDR3. Q6600 mild overclock on air, XFX790i mobo, Seasonic m12 700w, Antec P-182 with extra fans, Samsung 750 F1 and two 8800gt's superclock. I'm thinking about the OCZ DDR3 1333 PC3 106000. Is this overkill?

If you're worried about overkill, any DDR3 is overkill. This is especially true for a Q6600, which isn't going to need to go past 400 or 450MHz FSB anyway. Given the enormous price difference between DDR2 and DDR3, what makes you want DDR3?

I see what you mean. What memory would you suggest? I know just enough to know I don't know much but am determined to build my own. Thanks for the time to answer a new guy.

What do you think of the XFX 680i? Or should I just shell out the $ and get a better CPU? I had started out thinking I would upgrade when the prices fell and add the third card. I'm not wedded to XFX I just have heard they are very stable. Could be wrong, though. Thanks for your input. I know I've got a lot more reading to do but I've got to start somewhere. Sorry for sounding so new.

What size monitor are you using? You might find that a single graphics card would do just fine depending on the games and resolutions you plan to use. That would open up more motherboard choices.

Either way, DDR2-1066 isn't worth the money for a Q6600. I would get some quality DDR2-800. Since it's your first time, I'd recommend getting memory that's rated to run at 1.8V.

Samsung 2457. I was thinking about going with OCZ DDR2 800 PC2 6400 which is supposed to be SLI-ready (which I think means that it will run at its correct timings no matter what the front side bus is. I was going to bump up the volateg from default 1.8 to 2.1 to run it on first post. I'm going to be very careful with any changes to the BIOS (especially voltage), but it looks pretty straightforward. Or am I being naive again?

Yes. There's no such thing as SLI-ready RAM, just like there's no such thing as SLI-ready optical or hard drives, or SLI-ready CPU's. I also recommend that you buy 1.8-1.9v RAM, which is easy to find, in both 1GB and 2GB sticks. This is what I'm currently running in my Q6600 system, and I couldn't be happier with it.

I would rather spend more on a 9800GTX SLI or 2x9800GX2 than get DDR3 as it will give you no real performance increase that will dramatically increase performance in gaming. Also 790i motherboard are overpriced... also i can better oc with some of the P35 or 680i motherboards.

There should be a rating system to determine whether a USER / new computer builder is "sli-ready" :)
