I haven't overclocked RAM since the old DDR1 days so this is kind of new all over again.

I bought 8gb of Ripjaws on a black friday special for $25 shipped at newegg

I booted up successfully to 1600mhz @ 1.5v and ran a pass of memtest with no errors. The heatspeaders are warm to the touch but not hot by any means. Is this uncommon for cheap RAM to overclock like this? or could it be possible that these are the same chips as the DDR3 1600 has?

Well, if it passed Memtest, and you don't get crashes in Windows, then you are good to go. In general, I would guess that 1333 and 1600 memory are using similar chips - its only a 20% speed jump. I've had good luck with GSkill in general with running memory at faster speeds.

It was running all night last night and today and it seems to be good. RAM is still cool to the touch. Wow, can't believe I got this memory for $25 shipped!
