DDR266 RAM with A64 CPU

Hi, I currently have a Duron 800 (6x133) with 512MB of 266FSB Crucial Ram (PC2100?). I am planning on upgrading to an A64 3000+ on a Socket 939 or 754 board. Is it okay to use this RAM and if so how much of a difference would it make compared with 400FSB RAM or whatever the regular speed RAM is? Please keep in mind I'm a student on a modest budget and am not a gamer, at most I will be doing light video and audio encoding.

Thanks a bunch for any insight.

Because as I said I'm a student on a modest budget. Do you have an idea or link as to how much of a performance hit it will take? Thanks.

I had a couple of Crucial PC2100 sticks that would hit 180. I'd bet you could at least run them 166. You could always run the ram async @133 and still have a 2 GHz processor. A huge upgrade from a Duron 800, then upgrade your ram later. Good luck 🙂

Try to see if they can do 166Mhz, over the default 133. If so then that would be just fine.

AMD Chips don;t need all the super high speed memory like intel. So your lose in performance will not be that great.

if you have 2x256 ram, and buy 939, then your performance will be brilliant; dual channel will make up for it.

You could do it. I have actually considered it myself but I decided just to save my money and do it right when I have the money to upgrade. Thats my suggestion unless for some reason you have to have better performance. If you hadn't tried already you could try overclocking you current setup and that can help tame your apetite for more performance until you do have the money.

Does anybody have a link to a review concerning the use of different speeds or RAM on A64? Everybody seems to suggest that faster speed RAM is necessary/better but where has this been shown? Thanks.
