DDR2 RAM Installation

Im installing Corsair DDR2 Twin 2X memory pair. And on my mobo I have

Channel A, DIMM 0
Channel A, DIMM 1
Channel B, DIMM 0
Channel B, DIMM 1

Should I install one on Channel A and one on Channel B? Or use both Channel A?

Does it matter? Please advise.

I typically put one module in slot A0 and one module in B0, but on some boards it may be different. The motherboard user manual isn't always correct either. Some bioses will tell you if it is in dual or single mode. However if you run Memtest86+ to test for stability it should tell you if you are in dual or single channel mode.

It doesn't always help. A Biostar TForce 939 I bought for a music server has the slots labeled A1,A2,B1,B2 but the table of which slots to use lists DIMM1,DIMM2,DIMM3,DIMM4.

They do not say whether DIMM2 is A2 or B1.

Should I cut the red wire or the green one? 😕

Motherboards are typically color coded and if not then for dual channel with 2 sticks you will want them to go into either 1st&3rd slots or 2nd&4th.

Cpu-z or some other utility program should be able to confirm if you are truly running in dual channel mode.

And one set of dimm slots might work better on your motherboard than the other. You will want to run Memtest and check it afterwards to make sure everything is running right. I've seen some boards that run great in one set of dimm slots and not well in the other.

But you won't hurt anything trying them in different slots and testing. 😉
