Hi guys,

Just finished my built: Q6600 on Asus P5K-E, OCZ Platinum Rev 2, Tuniq 120, Antec 900

I am not impressed with the OCZ Platinum memory, it doesn't go above 800 at all, and I have to run 2.2V to get it stable at stock speed 800 at 4-4-4.

So I am going to return it and get another pair... what would you suggest?? Given the ddr2800 is about 70-80 bucks now AR, i am having hard time convincing myself to buy 1066 for double the price when I can OC the 800 to close to 1066 anyways, and the perf increase might not be significant.

Also, is it really beneficial to try for 1:1 timing? I current OC my Q6600 with 333x9 = 3ghz. I wonder if 400*8 with ddr2-800 at 1:1 am I going to see a speed boost? (if i can get it up to 400 that is :D )

please advise

thanks

I hear the Crucial Ballistix overclocks well (and it should since it's Micron D9), I don't know anything about the OCZ Reaper.

No I wouldn't bother with 1066 for the price.

Not trying to thread jack here, but I'm trying to choose between the OCZ Platinum and the Crucial Ballistix that you mention. I thought it made more sense to post here rather than start a new thread. Here are links:

As you can see, the Crucial is more expensive. I plan on overclocking my CPU (Q6600 to 333x9 = 3ghz, just like the OP), but not the memory.

Something I am confused about is that the Crucial voltage is rated at 2.2V stock, which seems really high. Other people report their motherboards detecting it at a lower voltage. Can someone shed some light on this for me? Recommendations are welcome.

I avoid OCZ stuffs like the plague. Crucial DDR2 800 should be able to boot at 1.8V, and hit 450MHz or higher with 2.1Vdimm. The Kingston "N5 OEM" DDR2 800 ValueRAM line is also very good, but these modules are a little expensive. My slowest stick is stable at 580MHz with 5-5-5-18-2T, and 480MHz with 4-4-4-12-2T (both @ 2.1Vdimm).

nwrigley.. well.. as you can see .. i am getting away from OCZ platinum and trying to get a new pair.. i am not the type of person who usually returns stuff.. esp thru mail and it's a pain..

but i have TWO pairs of OCZ platinum and none of the 4 modules perform well.... one of the 4 won't even handle stock speed stable.. and that RMA in a jiffy..

the other 3 were OK at stock.. but no overclock potential... and also require 2.1-2.2 to be stable.... i wouldn't recommend OCZ plat at all, as they use lower chips .. i believe the crucial is micron for sure.. and the ocz reaper MAY be micron...

i ended up choosing crucial..

if you want the lower priced.. i can recommend corsair xms which is same price as OCZ.. but the corsair for my HTPC runs at 1000mhz at cas5 no problem... doesn't do cas4 though

so... lets hope the crucial is up to stuff.. newegg shipped it yesterday..

finger crossed

Only the november batch did not...

Also supposedly the batch of Epilida's used have crazy abilities for clocking anyways. In a recent review, someone got the DDR2-800 modules to do DDR2-1192 at 2.25V... beating out the crucial DDR2-1066's he tested them against.

Granted, that is probably a freak result, but most people seem to be able to hit DDR2-1000 pretty easily.

Your best deal is Crucial DDR2-800 selling for $109 on newegg but has a $40 rebate. Cheapest D9s available.

Agreed... crucial FTW at the end of the day... unfortunately in Canada we don't share the excellent pricing that you guys have in the states... it is very unfair.

I have the OCZ 6400 DDR2 800 Plat 2, stable at 2.2 volts 906 mhz. So 4-4-4-15 at 453 at 2.2 volts. I dont see why yours would do that.

Yes, they still do. Got a set from Directron last week for my wife's computer....still had the Micron D9GMH chips under the heatsinks. Thankfully, Buffalo uses thermal tape that doesn't adhere very well until heated for a while....easily pulled off the sticks so you can check.

Not sure what Kingston put on my DDR2 800 ValueRAM, but they all manage to run between 580 and 600MHz with 2.1V/5-5-5-18-2T (ten 1GB modules and two 512MB modules). I don't believe Crucial has a monopoly on the +550MHz club.

Thanks for the info willie.. did you OC them? If so i am curious as to what clocks u were able to get.

Thanks for that info Serpent that is pretty impressive from Value Ram. However i have had a bad experience with my old Hyper X DDR400 modules, which were the best back in the day using samsung TCCDs. I am kind of weary of kingston now. However their warranty (while the product is popular) was quite good.
