qx6700 at 2.66ghz, i have good overclockable buffalo ddr2 800 2 gig dual channel. Everything else at stock including cpu, now i can either do 800 unlinked at 4-4-4-12 or linked ddr 667 at 3-3-3-12. Even 800 at 3-3-3-8 works, but is there any difference in game fps between 800mhz or 667mhz in games like unreal 3, team fortress 2 etc.

Hi Johndoe,

There should be very little if any difference in the 2 settings you are describing. You are slowing down the ram, but also able to lower the timings significantly which will offset the speed to some extent.

The only real way would be to test each config with 3DMark06 since you are talking about newer games. Whichever gives the highest score (should run 3 times at each setting to get average, if you choose to be that specific) will give you the best frame rates in a game.

Go with linked ddr 667 at 3-3-3-12.

Since you're not OCing at all, your max FSB is 266, so setting RAM higher than 533 won't make a difference.

It might even be better if you can set your ram to linked ddr 533 2-2-8. (I don't what timing, but the basic jist is to lower the timing since the MHZ is lower.)
