I was trying to test some memory in a dell E520. It has a 800Mhz FSB so is that why it won't boot with with 400Mhz memory?

Thanks,

The E520 probably does not support DDR2 400mhz memory. You likely need 533mhz or 667mhz, I know, even if the cpu has an 800mhz FSB.

What brand memory?

If I recall correctly my son in law had the same issue and it turned out the brand of memory had issues with the Dell mobo...

It's HP/Compaq server memory made by smart modular. I don't presently have a DDR2 server so thought I would try it in one of our dell pc's. I thought if the FSB was too fast for the memory I would see if I can underclock it but not sure if that's even possible. I did a memory compatibility on the crucial web site and they don't even make DDR2-400 anymore so was not sure if that is why they don't show it as an option.

Survey says brand of memory. Had this same issue many times with Dell machines, and also Via chipset machines give me problems. Check for compatibility with the chipset on google!

LOL, well the E520 certainly does not support ECC memory. The Precision systems are the only desktops that will work with ECC memory, IIRC.

Actually Dell systems have not been picky at all with memory brands. Dell uses Samsung, Nanya, Infineon, and in rare occassions I have seen Kingston and Micron as well.

But I have used Corsair, OCZ, Super Talent, Kingston, Patriot, as well as a couple of other brands, in Dell DDR2 systems, and not had any issues.

wish I didn't have those probs back when I was always working on them. Haven't had the opportunity to install any DDR2 in Dells. Hope it stays that way!

Yeah, I saw "server memory" and thought "ECC". Seems like OP is out of luck!

ecc memory will work on most machines that dont support it. it will ignore the ecc chip.

he probably has registered ECC server memory which doesnt work on most chipsets . the non registered ecc is what he COULD use on an e520.

ddr2-400 usually will work though it depends. some chipsets do not support it.

the intel i946gz, g965 and up dont support ddr2-400 at all. it has to be a i945 and below to support it (sometimes it will oc it to ddr2-533 on the non supported boards. i plugged ddr2-400 into an INTEL retail branded 946gz and it worked at ddr2-533)

Thanks for the tips everyone. I got a compaq server in that I could test the memory in. Before that I was looking at trying it in a dell precision workstation but it has the 975x chipset so hans post saved me some time from trying it in that one.
